What's Eating Aotearoa? A Spinoff Project

Project 2023-11-14 14:41:34 +1300

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

In 2024, The Spinoff wants to produce longform and accessible journalism focused on food and how it shapes this country. We need your help and are launching this ambitious fundraising campaign here on PledgeMe to support what we’re calling “What’s eating Aotearoa”, an equally ambitious editorial project all about food.

Food is at the heart of our most joyful moments, yet it’s a source of anxiety and shame for many.

From the supermarket duopoly to local producers to the hospitality sector to the conditions that lead to food poverty, from liquor licensing to diet culture and government reform to gastronomical delight, we want to bring you journalism in 2024 that explores the intersection of food with politics, culture, business and climate change.

WHY US AND WHY NOW?

Next year will be 40 years since Rogernomics fundamentally changed agriculture in this country. Food costs four times as much now as it did back then. Where and how we’re living has changed our diets. Climate change is set to alter them again.

Kai is in The Spinoff’s DNA, from our treasured rankings of chips and bikkies to our in-depth reporting on the bread-and-butter issues of New Zealand politics. Our storytelling on subjects like sexual abuse, forgotten sports heroes, local communities, consumer affairs and politics is award-winning. Most importantly, it’s firmly based right here, in Aotearoa.

Longform journalism takes time and investment. It’s hard to produce and find support for. We want our writers to be able to travel throughout the country to find the stories that matter. It takes a team to craft and create work of high quality, and we want to make sure it reaches as many of you as possible.

OUR GOAL:

$50,000

We’re aiming to raise $50,000 to fund longform and accessible journalism for this dedicated editorial project. This amount would go towards:

– Travel to ensure we can cover this across the country
– Giving our writers the time to work on big features
– Making the work sing with things like data and photography
– Commissioning work
– Editorial staff to ensure work is of the highest quality

OUR STRETCH GOALS:

If we reach $75,000, we will add a layer of explainer and access journalism to demystify big topics, bringing our trademark humour and “mid-shelf red wine” style to topics we think people should feel empowered to understand.

This amount will go to:
– Transforming our work into accessible formats for the largest possible audience
– A series of explainers on the big topics

OUR REWARDS:

We've got the whole team around the table for these rewards. Exclusive access, opportunities, rare Spinoff merch and recommendations.

Whether you're after a lunch with Duncan Greive, a hamper ranked by Mad Chapman, or a beer list curated by Alice Neville, the full squad is involved in thanking you for your support. Check out the rewards now!

These rewards also make great Christmas presents and on closure of the campaign, we will email you a voucher that you can print out and put under your tree.

OUR KEY PEOPLE:

Madeleine Chapman is the editor of The Spinoff. She first wrote for the site in 2016 as an intern. She is equally known for sharp opinion pieces and some of the most talked about food rankings in the land. She loves fried chicken.

Duncan Greive is the founder of The Spinoff, and writes with a focus on business and media. He also hosts media podcast The Fold.

Amber Easby is the CEO of The Spinoff. Easby was formerly executive producer at Hex Work Productions, makers of beloved series like Scratched and Alice Snedden’s Bad News.

WHO ARE WE?

Founded in 2014, The Spinoff has grown to become Aotearoa’s most innovative independent media organisation with a focus on vibrant, modern coverage of current affairs and pop culture.

The Spinoff focuses on stories and issues that affect everyday New Zealanders across our core sections of pop culture, politics, Ātea, books and kai.

Ambitious, curious and always seeking multiple perspectives, we've built a trophy cabinet of prestigious awards and continue to attract the country's top creative talent. We are funded by the generosity of our members and the vision of our partners.

T&Cs: Rewards will be sent out in January and February 2024 unless stated otherwise. Once the campaign has closed, we'll email you a voucher, which can be printed, forwarded or popped under the Christmas tree.
Rewards with an editorial component will be at the discretion of our editorial staff, and The Spinoff’s editorial standards and adherence to NZ Media Council standards apply. Event-based rewards will be subject to the availability of staff involved. Travel costs for any staff for speaking rewards or to The Spinoff in Auckland for dinner and podcast recording to be covered by reward recipient. All rewards to be claimed or completed by October 2024. Editorial staff will have creative control of any rewards including length. Lunch at Gilt Brasserie is for two people and includes chef’s selection menu and matched beverages that will be curated for you and can account for any dietary requirements. A hello from Josh will depend on date selected. Booking will be subject to availability.

One hour left of our PledgeMe campaign, last chance to grab a reward!

😍

We're so close to our next milestone!

14/12/2023 at 4:04 PM

There's only four hours to go, so this is your last chance to grab one of our very Spinoff rewards before Christmas.

We're so close to $54,000!

Thank you. We hit our first goal, now on to the next.

13/12/2023 at 10:42 AM

Kia ora koutou

Thank you to everyone who has pledged to this campaign, shared with friends and whānau, and sent messages of support. We’re delighted to have reached our first goal of $50,000. The longform part of What’s eating Aotearoa is happening and it’s all thanks to you.

We now want to push on to our next goal of $75,000. With additional pledges, we can break down big food topics into accessible explainers and transform our work into bite-sized formats to allow the broadest possible audience to feel empowered to understand all the forces at play.

Hitting that goal would mean that next year we can create a series of explainers on big topics. What, for example, is “the duopoly”, and why does it matter for New Zealanders? What does it mean when people talk about “food systems?” What does climate change have to do with food shortages?

We’d love to transform this work into formats for the largest possible audience across social media — we love words, but whole generations now learn visually about the world around them.

We’ve still got great rewards up for grabs including two exciting new rewards for the final days:

• Lunch for two at Josh Emett’s new restaurant Gilt with a personalised menu

• A wine collection consultation with By The Bottle’s sommelier Pete Connell

• Have one of our writers write the story of your or a loved ones life

• We've added another batch of Spinoff books signed by Toby Manhire

• You can grab the last coffee or lunch with Spinoff founder Duncan Greive or a chat with Everybody Eats founder Nick Loosley

• We still have the Hidden Gems eating out guide for Auckland Wellington and Christchurch written by Charlotte Muru-Lanning, a summer reading list from Claire Mabey and loads more

Thank you again for your support, you can help us continue to get the word out by sharing on Facebook, Insta, Twitter or Linkedin.

Four days to go, help us get to $50,000

11/12/2023 at 3:38 PM

We’re closing in on our first goal of $50,000 but need your help to get across the line.

To ensure this important project happens and we can deliver on the amazing rewards you’ve pledged for so far, please help us get the word out, pick up another reward for yourself or as a gift. We’ll send out a voucher with all relevant rewards so it can be used for Christmas gifting.

We’ve got the first of some special new rewards for our final week up now and they are perfect for budding entrepreneurs, businesses and podcast stars in the making.

- A coffee and a chat with Duncan Greive, founder of The Spinoff

- We'll write the story of your life (or the life of a loved one) for posterity

- A sit down with Nick Loosley, founder of Everybody Eats to soak up his knowledge on starting a business or social enterprise

- Always wanted to test an idea for a podcast? We’ll help you record a pilot.

We’ve also got a limited number of signed Spinoff books left, as well as exclusive access to our summer reading list, beer recommendations, a guide to eating out, and tips to craft a successful dating profile

The Spinoff’s big idea, your help and how it’s going 🍠

04/12/2023 at 5:02 PM

Just over a week ago we launched this PledgeMe campaign. We’ve now passed the $35k mark, and we couldn’t be more grateful to the hundreds of people who have supported this project so far. Thank you.

As you know, with Pledgeme it’s all or nothing, and we need to hit our first goal of $50,000. We also want to push on to our stretch goal of $75k. This will allow us to add a layer of explainer and access journalism to demystify big topics.

So many of our rewards have sold out, we’ve just added three brand new ones.

We need your help to spread the word. Share the link to our PledgeMe page and tell people about being a proud supporter of The Spinoff and quality journalism. Head to our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Linkedin and share our latest post about the campaign.

New rewards include:

Exclusive tips to create a dating profile from our resident expert Madeleine Holden after her custom dating profiles sold out.

Next year we’re turning 10! So we’ve added a couple of tickets to the birthday party so that you can join us. A decade of the Spinoff is worthy of a huge celebration.

We’ve also added a custom Spinoff "homepage”. When a Spinoff staff member leaves, we create a version of our homepage all about them to commemorate their time with us. This is your chance to be part of an exclusive club of Spinoff legends. The final file will be sent to you ready to print, frame and treasure for generations to come.

Thanks again.
