The Opera House Trust has been busy restoring a Waitati heritage community garden and the eclectic, beloved sculptures and artworks within the Garden. We now need to build a 50m long fence around our community garden because it borders the busy Doctors Point road.
We have an estimated cost of $15,000 for the fence and we'll be applying for grants to make up any shortfall from our fundraising.
The fence posts will be topped with a corten steel sculpture designed by renown New Zealand artist and trustee, Anita DeSoto.
Each post will include an engraved plaque with words or names of your choice (approximate 20 word limit). This is a great way to show your life-long support for this amazing creative community place.
The Opera House Trust is a registered private trust and a non profit run by volunteers. We want to thank Lotteries, the Dunedin City Council Arts and Communities and the Otago Community Trust for all their support for the project.
Here is one of our sculptures, the Teapot and Tea Cup which was recently restored by Stephen Belsten. Next up, restore the Sugar Bowl!
The Opera House buildings and land have been used as an intentional community, creative space and sanctuary for many people for over 20 years.
We are right next door to the Orokonui Lagoon Walk so we can make our Garden the perfect place to stop, rest, play and eat. We have a small orchard of apple, pear and plum trees to restore, a children's natural wild playground to build and, in time, we will use some of our land to support affordable housing.
We have hosted the Mullet Festival, the Barden Party Shakespeare, the Orphans Christmas and Matariki celebrations in our Garden - all with the help of amazing volunteers who love the Opera House.
Waitati (and Warrington too) is a hotbed of generous creative community people who make events shine.
