Westcoast Sunset

*Actual view of from the proposed webcam.

This project is to set up free public access, to a live streaming webcam in Phia Beach overlooking the beautiful black sands and surf breaking on Auckland's iconic surfing beach. It also has some of the best views when the sunsets over the west coast. For the purpose of monitoring local weather, surf conditions, and storms. We run the website surf.co.nz and have several static webcams across New Zealand. What is missing is live HD streaming cameras.

*Actual view of from the proposed webcam.

Piha will be the first live camera we will introduce since we relaunched the website this year. It will pan, zoom into the waves, and stream live vision of Piha Beach from the south, west and to the north 180 degrees.

The camera will always be free to access via our website surf.co.nz.

About the Web Camera

We have done our research and sourced the ideal webcam that can provide high-quality vision and withstand the has elements of the coastal environment.

The webcam has 42 x optical zoom lens, the camera offers more details over expansive areas. This series of cameras can be widely used for wide ranges of high-definition, such as the rivers, forests, roads, railways, airports, ports, squares, parks, scenic spots, stations and large venues and beaches!

- 42x optical zoom, 16x digital zoom

- High-quality imaging with 4 MP resolution

- Capturing every point fast even in critical events

It is an excellent choice for the location and a far cry from the one Surfco had installed 10x years ago. Back then it was a shakey Sony Handycam tho did a remarkable job!

The money will go towards buying the camera and network equipment. Installation, hosting, data costs, maintenance, and running the camera for 12x months.

Location

The location is up on the hill overlooking Piha Beach. A local legend has offered to host the camera and we will be rewarding them as they look after the cleaning and maintenance. We do have a second location lined up on the beach. Any additional funding raised over our budget will go toward setting up this second camera and others across the country in key surfing towns.

What about the Locals?

We will support all local businesses in Piha and promote the community. There is already surfing webcams in Piha but behind a paywall. We feel everyone should have free access to this vision and surfing conditions. Surfing for many in Auckland means jumping in the car and burning petrol. While there are options to surf to the east and west if you are prepared to spend time traveling it's good to know what the conditions are going to be! My experience with new surf cameras is it has a balanced reaction to crowds. They also not only bring in surfers but beachgoers, fishermen, tourists, and day-trippers. All are willing to spend money in cafes, shops and help local businesses.

About Surfco

I am Miles an individual who is rebuilding a long-time running surfing website called surf.co.nz. Established in 1997 Surfco has returned in 2021! I have 12+ years working in the surfing industry for Surfco, Coastalwatch & Surfing World. The project is important to me as providing surfing reports and conditions is essential for the safety of people entering or playing near the ocean. We also have onboard Andrew who is our national surf reporter along with half a dozen surf photographers. IF you would like to be involved email us at [email protected]

Did you know....

Piha is a coastal settlement on the western coast of the Auckland Region in New Zealand. It is one of the most popular beaches in the area and a major day-trip destination for Aucklanders throughout the year, and especially in summer.

Piha beach is renowned for great surfing and it was at Piha in 1958 that two Californian surf lifesavers (Bing Copeland and Rick Stoner) introduced modern surfing to New Zealand when they brought their Malibu boards and surfed across the face of the waves.

Thank you for taking the time to read out our project.

If you are in Auckland please donate you need this camera! If you are not in Auckland donate and help support your fellow waterman/woman. Imagine all those beautiful Westcoast sunsets you are missing! Our camera will be streaming them all 🎥

And don't worry we will be coming to your beach soon as we work on expanding our camera network! 🤙🤙
