Turning Kiwi Scientists Into Superheroes

The KiwiNet Emerging Innovator Programme

The scientist's journey from cutting-edge research to impactful technology is fraught.  A clever idea is not enough.  Few, if any, make it alone. You could help us help them.

What we do

We select the some of our bravest scientists with the most brilliant ideas to become New Zealand's changemakers. We help them lift their eyes from the science bench to a broader view of a world of lives and environments enriched by those very same scientific discoveries. A world changed for the better. Imagining the real-world potential of scientific discovery is the first step, the second is self-belief, the third - a reality check. And then the challenge begins.

Our Emerging Innovators know the science. To succeed they must know more. They must do more. They must build industry connections, become commercially savvy, and navigate intellectual property. Most importantly they must understand and articulate the value that their discoveries might bring to the world. The change is metamorphic.

The programme

The Emerging Innovator programme, established in 2015, delivers results. Through this small discrete intervention,  KiwiNet has already helped more than 70 Kiwi scientists see the value of their research in a new light.  The programme tranforms scientists by changing how they think about their science. Scientists are already innovators. Many innovate, then put their discovery in a box in the lab, publish a paper, then move on to their next scientific adventure. This programme targets specific scientists with potentially world-changing ideas, unlocking a mindset that reframes scientists' research efforts to creating real world impact – creating brilliance ‘out there’ in addition to ‘brilliance inside the lab’.

The heroes

The KiwiNet Emerging Innovator programme turns scientists into superheroes. Scientists who are fantastic at their science; scientists who become excited about the social, environmental, cultural and economic potential of their research; scientists who are excited about getting science out into the world to change the world. Over 55 academic researchers have completed the KiwiNet Emerging Innovator programme. Each one has impacted the world of science and the world at large.

Andrea Bubendorfer - Emerging Innovator alumna, scientist, co-inventor of MicroMaker3D accessible microfabrication technology, and inspiring change champion for scientific commercialisation at Callaghan Innovation Andrew Kralicek - Emerging Innovator alumnus, scientist, founder and CTO of Plant & Food Research spin out Scentian Bio with 'insect nose on a chip' technology for medical and industrial application

Aaron Marshall - Emerging Innovator alumnus, career scientist, serial entrenpreneur, talent builder, commercialisation influencer and co-founder of Zincovery a clever technology for cleaning up waste stream from the production of galvanised steel Swati Gupta - Emerging Innovator alumna, scientist, founder and CEO of Inclusys a educative social interaction platform for enabling people, especially children with autism to communicate and connect with their caregivers, and the world at large.

Our ask — 'Help us DOUBLE the number of Emerging Innovators we support in the next year'

KiwiNet can currently support up to 15 Emerging Innovators each year but we have a bigger ambition. Help us double-down on a programme that we know works. We want to create 30, or more, Science Superheroes in 2022!

Supporting our KiwiNet Emerging Innovator programme now, helps New Zealand build our pipeline of deep tech innovation into the future. New Zealand has great scientists. Your support of the Emerging Innovator programme will help us light the flame of change to get that science out into the world.

Our ask is for altruistic support. Financial support will not result in any preferred interests into technologies arising from the Emerging Innovator programme. KiwiNet is not a registered charity and donations will not be tax deductible.

The KiwiNet Emerging Innovator programme is underpinned by core values

Integrity Diversity Reciprocity
A solid, authentic programme developing skill and instilling confidence and gritty determination to go further faster An active pursuit of representation and accessibility for potential leaders to generate a breadth of great ideas across science Realising the potential of publicly funded research to enrich the world.

About KiwiNet

KiwiNet is a collaboration between eight Crown Research Institutes, seven Universities, three independent research organisations and Callaghan Innovation, representing 80% of New Zealand's publicly-funded researchers. We are funded by MBIE to deliver the PreSeed Accelerator fund, and to grow commercialisation capability in New Zealand, aiming to get our clever science out into the world. The Emerging Innovator programme has outgrown our current funding, and we are seeking public support to continue growing this proven intervention. We want to put a shout out to our generous supporters who have pledged toward our 'Turning Scientists into Superheroes' campaign – you are champions!

We have also reflected on the lockdown that has gripped NZ, which has limited our campaign.  Therefore we will extend our deadline, to allow us to boost the opportunity to connect with more generous supporters in this new traffic light ‘norm’.  KiwiNet believes in our scientists and wants to scale up the support for the clever scientists to transform more into Superheroes.

Thank you for your wonderful support, Campaign closes end of month.

Thank you to our generous supporters who have pledged toward our 'Turning Scientists into Superheroes' campaign! We are more than halfway to sour miniimum goal, to help scale up the support for the clever scientists of NZ to join our Emerging Innovator Programme.

To see exactly what kind of difference this programme makes to moving New Zealand science out into the real world, check out our video of Ged Finch on the PledgeMe site https://bit.ly/3AeJBNn

If there is anyone that you belive would be open to contribute to the PledgeMe drive, please share.
