EzSoil - Smart Plant Monitoring Devices
Project 2021-06-21 11:34:21 +1200

Sprout is an all-in-one plant monitor that measures key plant vitals. Sprout measures temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and sunlight then displays all this information on our web app. With this campaign, we hope to fund the manufacturing costs for Sprout, such as moving Sprout from a 3D printed casing to an injection moulded one.

Temperature
It is crucial plants are in a suitable climate, so Sprout tracks the temperature your plants are exposed to daily within 1°C accuracy.
Humidity
Humidity levels have extensive effects on plant growth and health, so Sprout measures relative humidity levels of the air with an accuracy of ±2%.
Moisture
Plants need water to survive, so Sprout uses a capacitive moisture sensor to measure the volume of water in the soil.
Sunlight
Sprout measures sunlight using a sensitive photodiode which can detect when the plant is exposed to direct, indirect or no sunlight.
The Monitoring Dashboard
The dashboard is the portal to Sprout

Home Page
The home page of the website allows you to overview
all connected modules and add other modules if required.
Module Page
The module page shows all sensor data and graphs this
data to give you insight into the conditions the plant is exposed to over time.
Settings Page
The settings page allows you to erase past data, delete
the module, customize the module image and change the recommended plant vitals.
Our story
We built EzSoil from the ground up, and it took one heck of a journey to get to where we are now.
Problem
We spent hundreds of dollars to freshen up our homes with pot plants and greenery every year, bringing refreshing air inside. Our lives were too hectic with school work and commitments to care for our plants, and they kept dying around our homes. We struggled to keep them alive in the rush and bustle that is today’s society. A fortune wasted on plants that decay within weeks. Our passion for building a sustainable future sparked an idea. Why not bring our ecosystem to our fingertips?

The idea - Sprout 🌱
To solve this problem, we developed Sprout. Sprout is a smart plant monitor designed to be placed in the soil of pot plants and measures key vital information with its four sensors to help the user keep the plant alive. The module collects the information from the temperature, humidity, moisture and sunlight sensors. It sends this data to a secure website that we have designed, where the user will log in to their own accounts and access the information. Once the user has selected the type of plant where the Sprout module is placed, the web app will recommend if it needs more or less water, if it is getting enough sunlight, if it is too humid or too hot.

Sprout In-depth
Let's dive deep into all the components of Sprout!
Temperature
Plants must be in a suitable climate. Temperature affects the photosynthesis, transpiration, respiration, germination and flowering of plants. When a plant is too hot, it begins to show signs of heat stress by wilting until eventually drying up, turning a crunchy brown before dying. Sprout tracks the temperature your plants are exposed to through a temperature sensor module up to every 10 minutes within 1°C accuracy. Different plants also have contrasting living conditions, so the EzSoil Dashboard can be tailored to the required temperature for your plant to ensure it lives in the optimal environment and stays alive for as long as possible.
Humidity
Humidity levels have extensive effects on plant growth and health. It affects how a plant transpires and evaporates. If the location is too humid, the plant will suffocate, while if it is not humid enough, the plant will evaporate too quickly. Both lead to a shorter life span of the plant, so Sprout measures the relative humidity levels of the air, with a humidity sensor module up to every 10 minutes with an accuracy of ±2%. The EzSoil Dashboard can be tailored to the required humidity for your plant to ensure it lives in the optimal conditions and stays alive for as long as possible.
Moisture
Plants need water to survive. Soil moisture helps to transport important nutrients from the soil to the plant, which it requires. Overwatering will drown the plant, while underwatering reduces the nutrients reaching the plant diminishing the life expectancy of the greenery. Sprout uses a capacitive moisture sensor pushed into the soil to measure the volume of water in the soil up to every 10 minutes. Hence, the user attains a perception of the perfect amount of water needed for their plant to flourish.
Sunlight
Sunshine is vital to all plants. Sunlight provides energy for a plant to convert inorganic resources to food. A lack of sunlight does not give plants sufficient energy to produce food, while excessive sunlight will damage the sensitive plant cells. Sprout measures sunlight using a sensitive photodiode which can detect when the plant is exposed to direct, indirect or no sunlight up to every 10 minutes, so you know when your plant is getting too little, too much or the perfect amount of light.
Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding with Pledge Me will allow us to bring Sprout into full production.
Currently, we are 3D printing the white module casings for Sprout. While this is a cheap and affordable option, it doesn't get the high-quality result we want to deliver. Furthermore, it takes approximately five hours to print each casing which is too great. The next best solution for producing the casing for Sprout is injection moulding. Injection moulding is a manufacturing process for producing parts by injecting molten material into a mould. The grand cost of $15,000 for injection moulding doesn't come from the molten material, but instead the creation of the metal mould itself. As a startup business comprised of three high school level students, we are unable to afford this. Every other aspect of this project has been sorted and completed, from the electronics and software to the product's packaging. This is the last piece of the puzzle that the EzSoil team needs to launch Sprout into full production.
