Living in New Zealand, as a Zimbabwean girl that lived in South Africa for 11 years before immigrating, makes me miss home, the food, the people, and the culture. After meeting other Africans in the country and hearing how much they miss home and how most kiwis/ indigenous people would love to one-day one-day experience African culture, the idea of a Zimbabwean restaurant struck me. I have come across so many other cultures and ethnicities such as Asian, Greek, Italian, etc. that have food spots of their own but never an African-themed restaurant.
The restaurant will be an African cuisine restaurant, more specifically Zimbabwean food, traditional and non-traditional. It will be a gourmet ethnic cuisine restaurant with the main theme being, the taste of Africa. The restaurant theme and atmosphere will be centered around Zimbabwean culture and overall African culture, including decor, music, set up, and employee attire. The idea is to make the restaurant an African experience for customers and to fully embody the motherland ambiance.
The story behind the name Matope and why this should be the company name is because my family, the Matope family, are royalty in Zimbabwe formerly known as Rhodesia. Nyatsimba Mutota was the warrior Prince of the Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe and his son and successor was Nyanhewe Matope, my great-great-great-grandfather. It seems only fit to name the restaurant Matope as a show of respect to the King.
The money will go towards the following start-up costs:
commercial space, licenses and permits, renovations and decor, kitchen supply and restaurant equipment, restaurant technology, employees, and marketing.
This campaign will help me take my first step as an entrepreneur and establish a business that represents my identity as an African and my family legacy.
