Soldiers Soup Short Film

Project 2020-08-17 11:01:58 +1200

Years after the conflict and thousands of miles away, the son of fallen Vietnam War veteran has a cultural awakening when he forms an unlikely bond with his Vietnamese neighbour in an attempt to learn more about his father.

Soldiers Soup is written by our Director Jack Harris and is going to be Produced by Kayla Steele, we are third year university students majoring in television and screen production at Auckland University of Technology. We are currently in the pre-production stages of our film where we are writing the script, casting and planning for a film that we are passionate about and excited to bring to the screen.

For director and writer, Jack Harris, the idea for soldier’s soup came about during his first trip to Vietnam in early 2018. Researching a country, he knew nothing about he became aware of Anthony Bourdain and his passion for food and culture. Captured by his outlook on the power of food, especially in understanding each other. Falling in love with the south East Asian nation, it’s complex history and amazing cuisine, inspired Jack and he vowed that one day, he would write a love letter to the culture that shifted his perspective so drastically.

Naturally, studying film at AUT the following year, this tribute began to manifest itself into various film ideas. Soldier’s Soup came about after Jack’s second trip to Vietnam, in late 2019. In which Jack, in an attempt to bond with his father, bought him tickets to Vietnam with his younger brother, and invited them to share in his love for the country that had captured his heart and his imagination!

But we need your help! Money funded for our film is going to go towards many things that we are unable to fund ourselves. These include props and costumes for our very specific production design and catering and transport for our very talented cast and crew.

We would like to thank everyone that has shown support to Soldiers Soup thus far ! We can’t wait to share this story with you all through our short film!
