Paddock To Plate – Restaurant Quality & Environment Friendly - Pledge To Receive Your Beef And Lamb Tasting Box Direct

Project 2020-08-11 14:21:59 +1200

My name is Tracey Bayliss and I am starting Grandad's Beef and Lamb meat boxes to bring regeneratively farmed, environmentally friendly meat boxes directly to your door.

I’ve been in love with the whole “Paddock to Plate” movement, shortening the food supply chain, and having a healthier approach to food on a daily basis.  For someone with an active family and lifestyle, I found it almost impossible to find this in my local supermarkets.  The meat I need to eat healthily and in a way that was supportive of the environment and super convenient and affordable.

I set out to provide something better, regeneratively farmed, GE free, hormone, and antibiotic-free, a nutrient-dense option that supports the environment and is readily available to everyone across the North Island of NZ with monthly or bi-monthly delivery, direct to your door for as little at $29 per week.

I want to give you the customer, access to NZ’s finest beef and lamb that has been dished up in some of NZ’s top restaurants, buy some of NZ’s top chefs.  The opportunity to choose a clean, environmentally friendly protein option, straight from our farm, and to give you the chance to join us on the mission to #regenerateNZ - regenerating Aotearoa one steak at a time!

The health and environmental damage caused by large-scale industrial livestock production should not be minimized, however, there are sustainable alternatives. Here in NZ we still have small to medium-sized family-owned and operated farms, where livestock is well-managed, and regenerative farming practices are helping to improve soil quality and sequester carbon.

When you consider all of the inputs required to make fake meat. The mono-cropped soy, all of the synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, the fossil fuels for the tractors, transport, and energy required to process it, the minerals that need to be mined, the labs, plastic…

Now, compare that to regenerative farming practices where cattle convert grass to nutrient-dense meat that humans have thrived on for thousands of years….

Meat is not the villain. Engineering ourselves away from nature is. Sadly, we are losing many of our small family-owned farms as they are becoming less and less financially viable, however by investing in our meat-boxes, you are helping to shorten the food supply chain and put more money back into the pocket of the farmer, as well as helping to regenerate the environment by choosing to support a cleaner, safer, more nutrient-dense protein option.

Our disconnection from nature is at the root of our dilemma. Only when we understand how real food is produced, and that humans are part of nature, (not in control of it) will we fully be able to move forward in a sustainable way.

We used to say “we are what we eat”, but now we know “we are what we eat, eats too” Just knowing where your meat comes from is no longer enough.  Grandad’s Beef farm accreditation gives you the confidence that the meat you are purchasing has been grown in a way that supports the cycle at the very beginning – with healthy soil, producing healthy pasture, producing healthy animals to promote healthy humans and a healthy environment.

Action – Ambition scheme

Every time you purchase a box from GB, you are helping to put money into the “AA” scheme which helps farmers to complete the environmental improvements they want to make on their farm.

Our farmers are already using farming practices that work with and support nature, however there are always improvements that we would love to make, sometimes it is a lack of time and or money that can prevent us from achieving these environmental ambitions.

So GB has introduced the self-funding AA scheme - for every animal purchased, money goes into the AA fund for that farm.  At the end of the year, the farmer is then able to use that money to “action” the environmental “ambitions” they had for their farm.  Which could be fencing off more waterways, planting shade trees, reinstating wetlands, sowing more diverse pastures, or what-ever environmental improvements they wish to complete.

What's in the Beef & Lamb Box?

Did you know that less than 10% of a beef carcass is prime steak cuts! We need to get cleverer about using the whole animal so we don’t need to be processing so many.  Distributing the whole animals also means we are able to give you better bang for your buck.

Each box comes with a highly curated selection of responsibly farmed, nutrient-dense beef & lamb cuts that are GE, hormone, and antibiotic-free. For example, a box might come with top sirloin cuts, short ribs, ground beef and/or lamb, sausages, a lamb rack.... To tell you exactly what's coming might ruin the surprise though and nobody likes the person who ruins the surprise!

We will put the boxes together to ensure that the whole animal is being distributed. Each month we will change it up a little bit, but don’t worry, we won’t make you eat lambs’ heart if you don’t want too! But those that are a little more adventurous will have the option to add these types of variety meats to their meat-box. (we are hoping to get some top NZ chefs to supply us with some recipe ideas for these cuts as well)

So, by signing up for our boxes, you become part of the solution! by reducing the numbers we need to grow and allowing us to respect and utilize the whole animal 😊

Think of us as the neighbourhood butcher for NZ

There is a little way to go, but we will shortly be able to add venison to our beef and lamb boxes and with the help of Mobile Beef Packers and the completion of their Registered Mobile Abattoir, we will be able to process all of the animals on-farm.  This will allow us to further improve the welfare of the animals as well as retain the whole animal, so we can offer you all of the variety meats as well.  My goal is to make, regeneratively farmed, GE free, hormone, and antibiotic-free, nutrient-dense protein, that supports the environment, more accessible and affordable than ever before. I am working with industry experts to provide you with the best products and cuts (cuts you used to see at your local butchery) along with a simple ordering and delivery system.

Join us and become part of the solution #regenerateNZ

So please join us on our “Paddock to Plate” journey, help us on our mission to #regenerateNZ and show NZ that this is the change you want to see in our food system. Help to bring something that is healthy and convenient directly to your door with Grandad’s Beef.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much meat comes in the box?

There are two box options to choose from for this campaign; The boxes will average around 5kg.  The family box is designed to have more meals, using cuts that are great for feeding busy, active families. The premium box will have some staple cuts, but also include some cuts you would tend to enjoy when the kids aren't home ;)

If you choose one of the subscription options, you will be able to switch boxes during the year if you wish, as well as being able to choose "add-ons" of additional cuts - we will get you signed over to the subscription model pending the success of this campaign. (you get the bonus of a discounted price by signing on through this campaign)

Where do you source your meat from?

All of our meat is sourced from our farm and from accredited Grandad’s Beef farms that we have partnered with who are revolutionizing regenerative farming. Our meat is of the highest quality and is always GE, hormone, and antibiotic-free.

So you choose what meat I receive monthly?

Yes. Our team spends countless hours curating the individual boxes you receive monthly. We choose the best possible combinations while ensuring a wide variety of high-quality meats and utilizing the whole animal.  If you decide to sign up for a subscription through our website (after the completion of the Pledge Me campaign and delivery of these taste demo boxes) you will also be able to add additional cuts e.g mince, sausages, etc to your order if you want to top up.   Don't worry, we won't make you eat lamb hearts or any of the other variety meats if you don't want too! However, you will be able to choose these as an "add-on" if you want to be a little more adventurous.

Are there different payment options?

You will need to honor your payment through Pledge Me as per their T&C's for these discounted boxes for this campaign. If you choose to sign onto one of our subscriptions after the campaign is completed then you will be able to sign-up through our website and be able to choose to set up a weekly payment option for our subscription plans.

Is freight included in the box price?

Yes, you just select the box you want and sit back and wait for it to be delivered to your door - no extra freight costs will be added.

How will my meat arrive?

For this campaign, all meat will be delivered flash-frozen.  However, once this campaign finishes, if you choose to sign onto our box subscriptions, you can choose whether you receive your meat fresh or flash-frozen at the peak of freshness, all cuts are individually packaged. These packages are then put into Chilltainer boxes designed to keep food cool.  Your meat should still be frozen or cold to the touch – simply place it into your fridge or freezer on arrival.

What about recycling / reusing packaging

Chilltainers (the boxes that your meat will arrive in) are a product of New Zealand and are recyclable in standard kerbside recycling. However, we are working with our courier company to try and find a way to collect these back from you if you sign onto our subscription option.  We will also be using Econic home compostable packaging for our meat packs, so less plastic for landfill! :)

Can I specify a delivery date for my box?

No, we need to send our boxes out at the beginning of the week to ensure boxes do not sit in courier depots over the weekend.  We are also breaking down whole animals and therefore need to ensure all of the boxes are packed ready to send at the same time.  This also allows us to maximize courier costs savings.  Pending the success of this campaign, we expect to be sending your meat box direct to you, the week starting the 5th of October 2020.

Does somebody need to be at home to accept the delivery?

No. Our boxes do not require a signature upon delivery, however, we do recommend that you bring your box inside as soon as you can to ensure maximum freshness and high quality. Please let us know if you have any special requests for delivery.

Do you deliver to rural addresses?

No, sadly it can take three or more days for a courier to deliver to a rural address.

Do you deliver to South Island addresses?

No, sorry we are not ready to do deliveries to the South Island yet (for the same reason as rural, we cannot guarantee overnight delivery).  However, this is something we are working on and hope to deliver in the next phase.

Other Questions?

I’d love to help! Just send me a note and I’ll respond asap.
