About

Carnies & Queers 2020

Project 2020-01-15 21:16:12 +1300

The Project:

Produced and Directed by Very Good at Falling, Carnies & Queers is a shared celebration of the joys that circus brings to the lives of many different humans. It will be a variety show not just in what’s being performed but also varieties in background and skill and themes.

This show’s aims are: building community, showing queer humans doing cool and fun circus stuff, and giving a variety of performers a relaxed and safe platform to share their talents.

Who are we?

Very Good at Falling is a newly formed collective of Queer performing artists.  Specifically, at this point, Nomes and Angie.  Our purpose is to develop a safe space for people of all ages and skill levels to tell their stories and perform art.

We believe that everyone has a story, and telling that story can be an incredibly important task, but not everyone has the opportunity to tell the stories that they want to share.  Our goal is to create spaces where those stories can be told.

Carnies & Queers is our first adventure into this space, and if we can do this successfully, it will give us a platform to build on, where we can start doing this on a bigger scale, and make it a sustainable goal.

Why we need you!

So, coming up with great ideas, it turns out, is the easy part!  Implementing them is fun, but also, it turns out, quite expensive!

Who know it cost so much to light quarter of a room?

We thought we could fund the whole thing ourselves, and make enough through koha at the door to cover costs and then give anything left over to OutLine.  Turns out, that's a pretty risky approach, and production costs, even with most people volunteering their time, are still pretty hefty.

Our minimum funding goal will cover the cost of providing stage lighting.  Anything above this will go towards space hire and equipment.  Once we break even, any additional funds will be donated to OutLine!

Breaking even with this venture will also put us in a space where we can actually make more events like this in the future!  Carnies & Queers 2021! Bigger and better! Plus some of our other plans...

Who is OutLine and why should we care whether they get a donation?

Outline is a charity that provides free counselling, support and advice to LGBTIA++ people of all ages throughout Aotearoa.  They are a critically important service, which is dependent on donations to keep running.  Members of the rainbow community have the highest rates of mental illness in the country, and with ever dwindling public funding for counselling and psychotherapy, services like OutLine are vital for our community.

If we can recover our costs through this campaign, we will be able to put all of the raffle and door money toward OutLine.  And even if we only make the minimum of $500 on here, we will still be able to give something.

OMG!  You folk are amazing!!!

We are so excited to announce that we have hit our funding target!

And it's all thanks to you!!!

This funding will make such a difference, as it means that we only have to cover the cost of venue hire from entry Koha and raffle sales!

If we can get to $750, which would cover the venue hire AND lighting! And mean that EVERYTHING we receive on the night can go to OUTLINE!

We are currently discussing the remaining finickety bits around venue layout, programme order, designing the programme and polishing our performances!  We are getting nervous, but are so excited to share this show with everyone!
