Project 2019-10-26 22:33:58 +1300
Kākāpō Creative is the home of the Wellington Regional Makerspace. Creative people can come and use a range of machines and tools that they wouldn't ordinarily have access to at home; collaborate with other like-minded people in a community space and reap the benefits of wholesale prices, thanks to the power of bulk purchasing.
Great for professionals, enthusiasts or students; this space has something for everyone. Check out some of the memberships we have on offer - if you don't live in Wellington, don't fret! There's an exclusive PledgeMe reward available, this is for anyone who is out of Wellington, but want to enjoy the benefits of bulk purchasing, machining at cost and that warm fuzzy feeling of being part of something big.
Whether you're into laser cutting, graphic design, woodwork, 3D printing, packaging, painting, drawing, office stuff, baking, teaching, sewing, computing, robotics, film making, or something else.... We can help you out.
Every person who uses this space makes it cheaper for themselves as well as the other creators around them.
You'll be able to access the MakerSpace at your leisure; go ahead and burn that midnight oil! With these smart RFID cards, you'll be able to swipe into the building, purchase materials and access the professional workshop areas that you've been inducted into.
We are looking to open the space in the Porirua Paraparaumu area, along the bypass to allow us to keep the running costs low, so that we can spend more money on equipment for the space.
New Zealanders have always had the know-how-can-do attitude, but now its time to bring it into the 21st century.
With a fast and economic turn around, we would like to make low cost prototyping and short run production available to manufacturers and hobbyists alike.
Manufacturing in New Zealand has largely been largely outsourced overseas. However with recent gains in automotive technology, we believe it’s time to bring it home.
Because we can buy in bulk, this means that we can offer low risk start up opportunities to businesses around NZ. You won't have to dish out big bucks for a couple of custom made T-shirts, for example. More bang for your buck, as the saying goes.
With a local makerspace, we will be able to provide cutting edge educational facilities. This will be great for sparking budding creativity, kiwi ingenuity, the local economy, native animals, plant life, new business ventures and most importantly, community connection and friendships for like-minded people.

RISK 1
Heavy Machinery is dangerous. That’s a fact. Protective equipment will be compulsory when using certain areas and machines. Even though we will have public liability insurance, we would ideally like all of our members to keep all of their extremities intact. That’s why we will program all membership cards to hold an induction validation for each machine and space, so that only inducted members can access the more dangerous areas of the workshop. This will ensure that everyone knows how to safely use the machines they are working with.
RISK 2
We know that most of our members and visitors will be honest, hard working people, but it only takes one instance of dishonesty to ruin the space for everyone else. For this reason we’ll have 24 hour video surveillance, motion sensors, documentation of individual RFID cards entering and exiting the building. This is to ensure that you are safe and all of your work is secure while on the premises.
RISK 3
Demand is important to think about, so we will have a membership survey prior to locking off the final design to make sure we are on the right track. This is because we honestly don’t know what the majority of our members will be using the space for. We just know that we want it to be fit for whatever you choose to make. If we end up having 200% more people interested in 3D printing than we originally projected, then we will make sure that there are enough 3D printers in our space for everyone to use.

We will find another way

Hey folks,
Thanks for all the support we have recieved so far. I think at this point it will be safe to say that the current climate has made this project come to an inevitable halt.
This is devistating for us, but we know that a recession is a hard time to start any business, let alone one with lots of physical contact, like a maker-space.
We will get this off the ground eventually, and we know you'll be there when we do.
Thanks again from Kākāpō Creative.
