Mau Studio - Father Daughter Artist Duo
Project 2019-07-03 22:52:06 +1200
In the beginning
Many moons ago, a teenage father burned the midnight oil to finish a series of paintings for his University assignment. While these paintings lay down to dry, his infant daughter woke up and decided to add her splash of creative flair. With no time to fix the paintings, Dad had no choice but to submit the artworks. The paintings impressed moderators so much that he was awarded an ‘A’ grade and the paintings were snapped up by keen buyers. Over 16 years later, this Father and Daughter duo continue to work together, specialising in the art of Tattoo, Tā Moko and the Visual Arts.
Mau Studio
Two years ago we launched Mau Studio from our home in Turangi (40mins south of Taupo). With the help of local clients and tourism around Lake Taupo, our small private studio has provided a homely and professional environment for people to feel safe and relaxed during their tattoo and moko experience. As Artists, it’s not only about doing what we love every day, it's about the happiness that comes with getting to know our people, sharing in their journey and providing a piece of art or taonga to acknowledge life's milestones. Tattooing is a spiritual artform that is so much more than just pictures etched in-skin. We enjoy the creative process of unpacking ideas with people of all ethnicities, working together to design a piece unique to each person we connect with. Our tattooing and moko process is collaborative, personal, healing and uplifting.
Since starting our home studio, we've built a healthy following online FB - Mau Studio Ink and appreciate that most people we work with now travel to connect with us. Clients usually bring with them whanau members or a support person, and with two artists working in the same space, we’ve definitely outgrown our small home studio.
Why we need your help
This year we are moving from our private home studio to a public location in Turangi's town centre. Opening up to the public is a big step for us and we need your help getting there. The new studio will be part of a shared creative space that includes a design and photography area, tattooing stations, a cuppa tea/coffee making area, a private consultation room and a cleaning/washroom area to the rear. The walls will be adorned with artwork, taonga, multimedia, information/education resources and themed to replicate our relaxed home studio vibe, values and tikanga with the primary focus of putting people at the heart of everything we create.
What will your funds go towards?
Wooh, we are raising $26,000! We know it's a very big ask. Most of what we raise will go towards our share in the commercial lease ($24,000 + outgoings/rates + insurance + GST per annum).
Our total studio cost including tattoo machines, studio design equipment, photography setup, inks, medical supplies, website and marketing is $58,000. We’ve managed to cover $32,000 ourselves through Lance travelling around for the last 2 years to connect and work with more clients, and reinvesting his earnings back into growing the studio. Reaching our target of $26,000 will open up our doors to a safe, spacious, hygienic and professional environment for all clients to enjoy. We need you guys to help get us over the line.
We’ve got a bunch of awesome rewards for you guys. Rewards are designed for ink and art lovers who can take advantage of the biggest discount rate that we'll ever offer. Check them out on the right!
Meet the whanau
Lance - Bossdad, qualified Designer, Kaiako/Art Teacher and Carver who consolidates 16years of creative industry passion into his love for Tā Moko and Tattooing. Lance has travelled and connected with many cultures around the world. He's very chill, positive, cheerful and enjoys a good laugh.
Amiria - The supermum and studio backbone. Mad skills in the kitchen and makes all our people feel warm and welcome with her witty and joyful persona. When she’s not breastfeeding or cleaning up after kids, she’s covering our administration, as well as filling the atmosphere with essential oils and making sure we're all healthy and well-nourished.
Mere - She is the future of our studio and is a living example of all our studio values. She is an extraordinary young artist apprentice, dedicated to her craft who will eventually push the Tattooing and Tā Moko artforms into the next age of awesomeness. As the oldest of 6 siblings, she's accustom to leadership with a natural maternal instinct to put others first.
To everyone who has loved and supported us along this journey. Our family, friends, mentors and all our clients, to the people who filled bookings overseas and those who have come to our home studio in Turangi, Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, we wouldn’t be here without you!
Pledges range from $5 koha up to $9000 'ink for two, for life'. Please check these out on the right. There is no limit on how many times someone can pledge. Artwork and T-shirt rewards will be mailed out. Tā Moko and Tattoo reward vouchers will be mailed out and can be redeemed in our new studio. Pledges must be redeemed within 12 months (this is ideal, but if you can’t redeem your pledge within this period get in touch and we can arrange something).
Much love,
Ngā Manaakitanga
The Mau Studio Whanau.
