“Tiakina o Tātou Mōana – Care for our Seas”
Over 10 days, and during Seaweek 2019 (Friday 1st March-Sunday 10th March), I will collect 1,000 littered cigarette butts per day through New Plymouth city, beaches and parks (10,000 in total).
10,000 butts, say whaaatttt?!?!
And WHY?
Because I love the ocean and the earth so much, that I want to protect what I love. I want to see the earth and the oceans healthy and thriving and I want my children and my children's children and the future of the earth to be plastic pollution free. We are all kaitiaki of this land - this is my way of caring for the earth.
It is estimated that trillions (yes trillions) of cigarette butts, make their way into the natural environment yearly. I see this! I do a beach clean most days and there is never a day that I do not see handfulls of butts. 55% of debris found on NZ beach cleans are cigarette butts.
The reason they are so rampant is that the people who drop them do not realise they are plastic and instead think they are made from paper and so are biodegradable. When infact they are made from a plastic called cellulose acetate and they take 10 years+ to break down (which then they just degrade into the micro 12,000 plastic fibres). To make matters worse they are filled with toxins absorbed from the tobacco which can be deadly to aquatic life.
This is not a campaign against smoking or smokers, it is a campaign about raising awareness. What we don't know, we don't know. I want to change that part. I want it to be common knowledge and conversation that butts are made from plastic, and that they are one of the biggest contributers of ocean plastic. That way people can then make a choice, and make a change.
Your Pledge will go toward creating and designing the campaign, starting local in Taranaki, and stretching NZ wide.
Any pledges over will go toward more advertising with hopes of enough to create a professional video to raise awareness about this pressing issue.
I will keep the butts afterward for raising awareness, for education, and offering solutions to the butt issue.
So much love and gratitude to you for making a pledge and supporting this important issue. We are each only one person, but when we work for the common good, acting as the global family that we are; we become a powerful force of change!

Kia ora all you wonderful people,
I had been waiting patiently, (hopefully), for the PledgeMe crew to let me know details of all you beautiful people who have pledged on this campaign, every day watching the days go by!
And finally today I asked, as tomorrow is D-day and I am glad I did as there was a glitch and I was never sent your details!
So over the next week I will be delivering and postiing your goodies, letting the places know who has won what so that they can contact you directly (Raglan Coconut Yoghurt reward), and if you pledged on a Free Coffee your name will be on a list there now, so go enjoy!!
All others I will be in touch with in the next week for some of the more obsure rewards!
Many thanks for your patience.
Tomorrow is the first day of pickups so I will do an update on how I am going over the weekend, I am both nervous and excited!!!
I can not thank you enough for the support you have shown me, without the backing from you all, pledging for this to make it happen I would not be this far along so THANK YOU!!!
Kindest wishes, Lorella
The Movie Is Going Ahead!!
16/02/2019 at 5:18 PM
SO PRETTY MUCH THE MOST EXCITING NEWS FOR ME (if you did not catch any of my other posts).
You know how my dream result for the 10,000 butts in 10 days campaign was to create a movie that can be shared far and wide to raise awareness that butts are harmful plastic?
WELL! The movie is happening!!
New Plymouth District Council are working with me to create it! And filming will start while I am doing my pick ups (which is in less than two weeks)!!
I have spent two days writing the script, which I canned it all after waking up at 3am last night with the whole script in my head and it's perfect!
Thank you all so much again for helping me to make this happen! Without your support with the Pledgeme campaign, whether you donated products for rewards, you pledged, you shared my campaign or simply liked it or sent me happy thoughts. It has all made this happen! More pledges and rewards are still available until tomorrow night at 6pm, or vote for me for Ocean Champion so that I may win the $500 prize to go toward this project, as the more I have to work with, the further I can spread it.
https://seaweek.org.nz/ocean-champion-2019-challenges/
The council have also said they can help with spreading it throughout Taranaki, so it will be the NZ wide thing which will be my next step and these wondering funds which will help that happen!
Soooo pumped!
So much love and gratitude for you all, for the Earth and for our beautiful moana xxx
