About

Bring The Byte Series To New Zealand!

Project 2018-06-23 09:38:23 +1200

Hi, I'm Cat Connor.

I'm a crime thriller author living in Upper Hutt and writing international ficiton.

This journey of mine into writing thrillers began with a death threat (actually several death threats) and a question 'What's the worst case scenario?' and from that came my main character, with the answer - which became a book called KILLERBYTE.

Rebel ePublishers published KILLERBYTE in 2009 and have published one Byte book a year since then.

It's awesome to have a publisher in the USA what’s not awesome is the cost of bringing books to NZ.

Which brings me to the purpose of this project, to get the Byte Series novels printed in New Zealand for New Zealanders.

Why?

- Because wonderful people constantly come into Writers Plot bookshop to buy my books and leave disappointed.

- Because I am often asked where people can buy paperbacks of the Byte Series in NZ and have to say they can't.

- Because it feels wrong directing customers to American websites to purchase books written by an Upper Hutt Crime Thriller author!

- The quality of printing is better here.

- Using Print of Demand technology means less environmental impact. We're only printing what we can sell/store and making sure we have the ability to print as required.

- Quick turn around means we can order and have the books arrive within 7 days.

- Supporting NZ businesses instead of American giants. (Kiwi print company, couriers, bookshops, and author!)

- GST is already factored into the print cost.

- And, to be quite honest, they’re really pretty and I want to see them on shelves here.

People do say nice things about my work:

“Killerbyte is a fast-paced techno-thriller with welcome black humour, a likable pair of protagonists with some real depths, and a mystery full of twists and turns. Readers may want to peek through their fingers every now and then, but it’ll be worth it.” - Margo Kinberg, mystery novelist, crime fiction commentator and associate professor in California.

“If you like action packed thrillers that thrill, with high stakes and kick-ass heroines, then I’d recommend giving Databyte and Connor’s entire ‘byte’ series a try.” - Craig Sisterson; ex-lawyer, feature writer, book reviewer and founder of the Ngaio Marsh Awards.

“In Metabyte, Cat Connor combines realistic dialogue, a tech-savvy narrative, and a plot with more twists and turns than the Potomac River, and believable characters that lead to an unpredictable and entertaining finale.” - Nick Spill, author of The Jaded Kiwi.

And just today I saw this on Facebook:

[Eraserbyte] This was my favorite of Cat’s books. I felt like I was part of it all. I love all the Byte books and am currently on my second read through and still enjoying them all. - Erin Kidman, Zeba-T Designs

So tired & it’s your fault Cat Connor! I started your book [killerbyte] last night and couldn’t stop until LATE. Can’t wait to carry on reading!!! - Lee Barrott, Lee-Thal Latte.

The PLAN:

To achieve the goal of having my books indie bookshops (and available online from NZ) I need to raise a minimun of $1,600. That will give us a good starting point.

Expenses:

Cost of printing: Perfect bound, page count 320 to 458, white paper, black and white interior, full colour double laminate cover. Between $12-14 each.

Courier from Auckland to Upper Hutt.

Extended goals:

$2,300

Printing 9 titles, plus 2 short story collections and 1 novella.

Including refomating and cover design for the novella.

$2,800

Will make sure that all the books are printed and that there are funds ready for the NZ printing of 10th book when it’s released. That means there will be books available at the launch - have you been to one of my launches? You really should come to the next one, they’re so much fun and there is cake!

$4000

All of the above will happen.

Plus the byte series poetry book can be reformated and printed here. AND, my Upper Hutt set mystery will be reformatted for print and available in NZ!

And there is a good chance we could start of the long term extended goal of being able to create a podcast project to bring the books alive (our plan includes - special guests, co-hosts, delving into the background of various characters, the story behind each book - you get the idea. It’ll be fun and informative and I’ve got some great guests up my sleeve! And a fantastic mentor to work with.)

Updates 3

It's been a year!!

06/08/2019 at 7:04 AM

Just wanted to tell you all where we are at now.

Since this campaign - we have all the Byte Series books in Writers Plot Bookshop including Qubyte which is #10 and was released as a paperback in March 2019.

But wait there's more ... also in store (as of July 2019) are paperback copies of Snakebyte (5.0 - the novella that slots in between Soundbyte and Databyte), and the newly revamped edition of Whispers in the Water - which the poetry book that goes with the series. Pretty exciting to have three new paperbacks in store.

November 10th this year is the release date for Cryptobyte (book 11), not sure yet if the paperbacks will be in store in Nov or if we'll launch that like we did Qubyte. We did a digital release first then the paperback a few months later.

In other news: my original publisher is no more and now it's 9mm Press.

Thank you for making all this possible!

Stay Frosty

We can print the first 9 books here in NZ!!

They hopefully will be available by the end of September.

You all rock.

Hi ya,

Now that this campaign is underway and I can take a breath, I'd like to acknowledge and thank some really wonderful people.

If it wasn't for Heather Blissett and her idea to use crowd funding none of this would've happened. Thank you Heather!

Big thanks to Yvonne Harrison who said no to me regarding shooting a quick video on my phone, and who then proceeded to teach us all a thing or two about video production. Yvonne gave up her time and energy and worked with talentless talent (me), and an inexperienced crew! And got it done! She also edited, and pulled the whole video together!

Thank you, Erin Kidman - kept me from losing my shit more than she probably knows during the two weeks it took before we shot the video and during the filming itself.

Graeme Knowles - saved the day with his light boxes and also kept me sane, thanks Graeme!

Vanessa Calaby - you are fabulous at continuity! Thank you, Nessa!

James and Maddie - thank you both for coming and helping and being awesome!

Also big thanks to Lou Zimmerman who came along when I first said I needed help. Your positivity, Lou, is inspiring.

Thanks to Lee Barrott for all the moral support!

You guys are amazing. I am so grateful to have you all in my corner.

Thank you all so very much!

With love,

Cat xx
