About

Repowering The Good Ship RV Grampus

Project 2017-01-04 16:26:25 +1300

The trusty research vessel RV Grampus serves researchers from the NZ Whale and Dolphin Trust proudly. This 6m alloy pontoon boat was designed for our research programmes and is as charismatic as the species we study. She plies between the remote bays of Banks Peninsula helping our team conduct research on our endemic and endangered Hector’s dolphin. Grampus also braves the offshore conditions miles off the coast of Kaikoura tracking sperm whales. Through howling southerlies and brisk north-easters, Grampus has never let us down. This is because Grampus is rigorously maintained, an expensive process for a small non-profit organisation. After just over 2000hrs of sterling service, our current outboard needs replacing. Replacing our current Yamaha F115 with a brand new model will help keep Grampus’s reliability record flawless. A donation to our cause will allow us to continue our extensive field work that is crucial for our research on NZs incredible marine mammal species, the threats they face and possible conservation solutions.

We have been generously offered a new Yamaha F115 outboard engine at cost price from the good folks at Yamaha NZ. We hope to raise the remaining funds for the purchase and installation of the engine through this PledgeMe. In order to support the wonderful community of Kaikoura where so much of our work is carried out, we decided to have the outboard fitted by our good friends at Kaikoura Marine. We delivered the engine ourselves to Kaikoura Marine as freight in and out of the town is still very limited following the earthquake.

The engine has been supplied and fitted, but now we have a sizable bill to pay! We still require an additional $NZD 10,0000. RV Grampus has just finished 3 months of fieldwork at Kaikoura before during and after the earthquake. The boat has now arrived in Akaroa where it'll be used for another 3 months on our Hector's dolphin programme. We take Grampus out every good weather day, in summer this can be up to 19 days in a row! So our new engine will be put to immediate good use on our most important projects. A donation to our PledgeMe fund is a donation towards our important research work. Work that is aimed at understanding and protecting some of our national treasures, our Taonga, the whales and dolphins of New Zealand.
