Winning NZ Olympic Song - Band Recording

About Me:

If we haven't met before - my name is Amy Bowie and I am a singer-songwriter-actress, self-employed musician and singing teacher from Christchurch.

You can read my full bio here: http://www.myspace.com/amybowie

About the Project:

Last year you may have voted for my song "The Emotion" which won the first round of the NZ Olympic Committee, APRA and Play It Strange's songwriting competition: 'Anthem In Black', and was released on an album of the same name.

Remember this?

Well... anyway, here I am performing a guitar version of it live with my co-stars, singer Joshua Goodare and Guitarist Sam Blakelock for The Mayor and the Media at the Official Announcement that Christchurch will be welcoming the athletes home:

Since this performance, a second round of the competition has been held with more entrants from around the country. A second album has been produced. The top 5 songs from this second round will go head-to-head with the top 5 songs from the first round, including "The Emotion" in March, for the title of the Official New Zealand Song of The London 2012 Olympic Games.

The songs are likely to feature in official coverage of the Olympics - and are - in some cases - already featuring in Olympics related coverage online, on radio and on TV.

If my song is going to have a serious chance at winning the title, or getting more, and better coverage throughout the Olympics and the campaign: more TV, more online, more, more more... enabling me to make some APRA airplay royalties and record more of my songs... I really need to "up my game" and make my song the *best* it can possibly be, making the most of this wonderful opportunity. That means I need to record it with a band....

If you listen to both albums - you will notice that "The Emotion" is the only song that has only 1 acoustic instrument and voice - apart from a choral piece. Some songs have been written and produced by full-time professional film and television composers with full access both to recording facilities and full band. One song has been produced with the help of thousands of dollars of past NZ On Air Funding.

When Mike Chunn, CEO of Play It Strange gave me the album deadline and small budget of prizewinnings for recording the song, I gasped - as it was very shortly after the Christchurch Earthquake. I needed to record with piano. Every studio in the city was either 'munted' or in the Red Zone, including all those with suitable pianos.

In desperation, I got in touch with Richard Marrett, a wonderful Christchurch Musical Director and pianist who had introduced me to session recording when I was 17. He listened to the song and offered to produce it for me, thus rescuing the entire project so that it would be fit for album consumption. Using Richard’s own piano at his own home we set about recording the song. This was all done on borrowed gear, as Michael Bell, our Engineer, could not access his studio in the Red Zone. Josh and I had to whisper the guide vocals from Richard’s adjacent office, with final vocals recorded at Michael’s friend’s home studio.

Christchurch now has a fabulous new studio called “AngelsGate” which has a Grand Piano and is a fantastic facility – owned and operated by Stevie Wonder’s former Tour Guitar tech, Kevin Allison. Therefore, the time is now right to go forth and make this song as “phat” and fabulous as it possibly can be.

The New Zealand On Air funding budget for a radio single produced with full band is currently $4,000 with investment from the artist on top. It used to be $5000. In order to record this song well with band, and to maximize the number of instruments, layers and tracks I can use – the minimum budget I will require is $5000.00. Ideally, I’d like to achieve this before the March “vote”. Perhaps it is possible you are reading this because I have approached you through your business.

This recording is not ‘all about me’. I aim to record the entire project in Christchurch with all Christchurch musicians and singers – all of whom have been greatly affected by the earthquake with a loss of venues and theatres. I wish to stay in Christchurch and continue to make a contribution to the Arts community – which is one of the reasons I am working as the Brand Ambassador for Pledgeme in Christchurch. You may have signed “The Pledge” to stay here. By pledging your support for this project, you are enabling me to help “spread the word”, and to support the development of future PledgeMe projects in Christchurch and beyond our shaky city.

You’re also pledging your support to inspire the ears of our Olympic Team – as the songs are going to London on the Olympics Team’s ipods to serve as inspiration. I hope that the athletes can listen to my song and feel “The Emotion” of what it might be like to wear a Gold Medal -in their minds - over and over again, to help them keep their minds in the right space for high achievement at The Games.
