What is Capoeira?

Watch the video above! Capoeira is a dynamic art form played in pairs that incorporates dance, martial art, acrobatics, music, community, philosophy and self-expression....It comes from Brazil, created by the African slaves as a way to develop cultural expression and self-defence in a time of oppression.

And the festival?

This is Aruandê Capoeira New Zealand's 7th annual festival. We bring international masters and teachers together, as well as capoeiristas (someone who plays capoeira) from around New Zealand, to share with each other and the community this little-known art. Our aims are simple: To develop the work of capoeira within communities around New Zealand, to give the public a chance to have access to Brazilian culture and have fun!

Our event is held in two locations that change every year. This year it is Wellington (14-16 Sep) and Dunedin (7-9 Sep). It involves heaps of public workshops in capoeira, samba (not the Rio de Janeiro type - but you get to move your booty all the same..), maculelê (a traditional fight-dance with sticks), music and cooking (!). We are giving free classes at schools in the area, and a free performance at none other than Te Papa - Museum of New Zealand! (We are very excited).

A wee bit on who we are...

Our teacher is Professor Pererê, who came to New Zealand from Brazil 7 years ago. He has created the network that is Aruandê Capoeira New Zealand, with a lot of hard work, determination and many cold winters in Dunedin. Now we exist all around New Zealand (Motueka, Queenstown, Dunedin, Wellington, Kaikoura..) and give classes to adults, children, and in schools and community projects. And we love to get together and show the public what capoeira really is!

We are all volunteers trying to make this event happen and any shortfall we have will be covered personally, so any support you can give is so very much appreciated. The money raised will be used on venue hire, accommodation costs and honorarium we give to the travelling teachers who are giving their time and knowledge to this event.

Thank you so much for supporting our event!
