About

Boys' And Girls' Institute Of Wellington Poutokomanawa Project

Project 2014-11-28 11:22:33 +1300

BGI is an organisation that was founded by young people in 1883 with a huge passion for youth and their whānau. They strive to be a place where Pakeha and Māori rangatahi participate meaningfuly in making Wellington a better region for all.

We are embarking on the journey of carving a Poutokomanawa to become the heart of our soon to be renovated community house. This large carved post will be a legacy that will tell the 133 year story of BGI’s history, will welcome young people and their whānau to BGI and inspire future generations. This is a unique project – a predominantly pakeha organisation using a Maori method of storytelling – a carved log – rather than a book to record our history.

It will stand in the centre of BGI’s entrance courtyard, the symbolic heart of an organisation that is dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk youth, and the tallest poutokomanawa in Wellington.

Te Ati Awa carver will run carving workshops for a core group of 35 young people to carve a 40-foot totara log into a poutokomanawa. The medium of carving will be used to develop a programme specifically based around the importance of identity (knowing who you are), attitude (your application to what you do) and performance (how to succeed at school and in life).

Whilst building the pou, we also aim to create a legacy that will be around for a long time, one which will inspire future generations.
