The Dream

Can you imagine a building in the centre of your city or town being pulled down because it was at risk of earthquake damage? My plan is to fill that void by creating a pocket park/food cart village -- an outdoor eating area with apple crate planter boxes, old wooden electrical reels for tables, local food carts, and a small stage or performance area, this is the dream of a humble chef and talented architect. The aim is that this is an eco friendly site and as local as possible meaning there is a focus on community.

My name is Michael McMeeken and I wish to run my food cart in this developed outdoor pocket park in the centre of Nelson. I’m currently working with architect Rachel Dodd to make this a reality. We are planning to make an empty lot (53 Bridge Street) a community eating park.  We will be involving the community as much as possible in this project.

Try if you will imagining a food cart village where a few of the best carts reside – carts that compliment each other – for example a coffee cart, a Mexican cart, a dessert cart and my cart (Streat Kitchen - just good food). Picture this food cart village in a maintained lot with old wooden electrical reels for tables,  recycling station with a compostables bin, trees growing out of apple crates, vegetables and herbs grown on site and a play area for kids as well as live music. This section enjoys good sun too.

It will be run as a breakfast and lunch set-up Monday to Friday with future possibilities of dinner trade on Thursday and Friday nights and Saturday, Sunday lunches if demand calls for it.

In the future I'd like to create a solar energy source to power the site and hopefully add back to the grid. I also would like to collect rain water via a canopy system to use on site. Big dreams, but maybe one day!

Our budget for this project doesn't exist. We're both doing this off our own backs. We are relying on community support to help make this happen.
