The State of Documentaries is in dire trouble!

In Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud, a country where documentaries and storytelling once prospered, a dark shadow has descended. The overwhelming presence of sitcoms and “reality” TV has squandered the availability and support for the real stories and struggles of  people. Led by the evil General Commercial, the darkness is gaining speed through mountainous funds and general public apathy. Documentary was fast forced out of the light and into the shadows. The people became lost as truth became assailed by fiction and commercialism..

When it appeared as though all hope was lost, two ordinary citizens rose from the shadows to become the protectors of documentary. The Mighty Doc and Justice Edge knew it would not be a simple task, so they began to assemble a group of diverse individuals with unique skills to help them on their mission.

The Doc Edge League is working hard to save documentary, highlighting its importance and inspiring the public to reject apathy and join the movement. For months, the Doc Edge League has been organising activities and in particular, a festival to share with the public the best local and international documentaries.

But, to make this happen, Doc Edge League needs one special ingredient to succeed: YOU

Without your help and support, it will be impossible to resist the sheer power of General

Commercial. We stand here today, asking you to pledge your allegiance and to join us in our fight. Together we can banish the darkness; together we can bring documentary back to the lives of the citizens; together we can be a force to be reckoned with!

DON’T WASTE TIME, TIE ON YOUR CAPE AND JOIN THE DOC EDGE LEAGUE TODAY!

Documentary Edge Festival is Australasia’s premiere international documentary film festival. Held annually in Auckland and Wellington, it showcases over 40 of the very best New Zealand and international documentaries. We believe in bringing the wealth of true story telling and ensure its presence and visibility in New Zealand.

The Festival is run by the Documentary New Zealand Trust a non-profit organisation committed to promoting documentary film-making and and advocating opportunities for NZ documentary film-makers. We don't get any infrastructure funding, and rely on the community funders, sponsorship partnerships to help us bring the festival to you each year. Dan Shanan is the only full time staff working with interns and volunteers to deliver everything from the Festival to Screen Edge forum to DOC lab to Doc Edge Campus to DOCommunity and all the advocacy/mentoring work we do.

If you believe in the importance of documentaries or maybe through our work over the past years we have inspired you to voice your own stories we now turn to you and ask for your support, by making a pledge.

Your pledges will greatly assist us with what we need to help bring our 2013 Festival - 8th edition to life in Auckland and Wellington. Be our Super-Hero!
