Kia Ora! I'm Ali Jacs, a performance poet from Wellington, on a mission to get the world to tell their own stories in a creative and passionate fashion. I recently won the New Zealand National Poetry Slam and as the country's first female Slam Champion, I want to head to the Minneapolis in March to represent Aotearoa in the Women of the World Poetry Slam. I need your help to get there!
If you're scratching your head, a poetry slam is a high-energy audience-interactive performance poetry competition judged by five randomly selected audience members on the night. You can check out a poetry slam and find out just why I suck so badly at Monopoly by watching the video above.
After attending the many workshops, performance events and learning sessions of this four-day tournament, I will come back to New Zealand armed with a brand new toolbox of skills and ideas to pass along to the team who run Poetry in Motion, Wellington's monthly performance poetry show at Heaven Pizza. We are a passionate team of individuals dedicated to promoting spoken word and performance poetry in Wellington, and attracting international spoken word artists.
Spoken word poetry is one of the fastest growing performance arts of the modern age and poetry slams are now taking countries all over the world by storm, encouraging people young and old to take to the mic, voice their every passion and despair, their joy and hardship, and sharing their stories of what is is to be human in this rapidly changing world.
Return flights to Minneapolis plus accommodation comes to around $3,000, and I'm hoping to raise half of this through PledgeMe. The rest will be covered by savings and by other fundraising avenues such as gigs, fundraising dinners and such.
Please help me put New Zealand on the map of the exploding international slam poetry scene by sending me to the Women of the World Poetry Slam.
With a thousand thank yous and much aroha from the bottom of my heart,
Ali Jacs
