THIS PLASTIC FREE JULY please help us (one last time) to #stopthebottling!
Your support could help stop the production of up to 8 billion plastic bottles per year & protect our wai
To Pledge...
Click on any of the buttons to the right and follow the instructions.
THANK YOU!
For the first time we're not offering rewards - let us know your thoughts on that.
And if you can't pledge you can still help us A LOT by sharing this page far and wide, via email or social media (or both), and by telling your friends and family!
Your support...
will give us the best chance we have of overturning a High Court Decision that:
Allows Cloud Ocean Water and Rapaki Natural Resources Limited to use over 8 billion litres of water per year for bottled water export.
Has implications for the way water is allocated across New Zealand, making it a simple exercise to change the use of existing water permits without being able to alter the conditions of the water 'take'.
Effectively increases the rights of water permit holders and supports a market for water via land sales.
Suggests that when granting consents for water bottling, the effects of plastic bottles on the environment can not be considered
Did not adequately consider the concerns of local iwi/Maori
Why we're fundraising again
Now, if you feel like you're having a deja vu moment you're not going mad - we HAVE run this Court of Appeal campaign once before...
With NZ's help we raised $55,000 to get to the Court of Appeal, but the High Court took us by surprise and awarded the respondants over $70,000 in costs.
After paying that, we still have some funds in the bank but we need to raise at least another $30,000 - all for legal bills.
N.B. Our committee team is 100% happily unpaid, so every cent you give goes towards legal costs.
Finally, if we win (and we think we can), any money left unspent, and any costs awarded in our favour, will be set aside for other community legal cases that aim to protect our wai.
Aotearoa Water Action
AWA was 'born' in 2018 to take on Canterbury Regional Council (ECan) and challenge the water bottling consents granted to Cloud Ocean Water and Rapaki Natural Resources Limited.
Since then we have helped Sustainable Otakiri take on bottling company Cresswell NZ;
We have delivered to ECan a 114,000-strong petition against the Cloud Ocean consents;
And thanks in large part to our team it is now LGNZ's policy to advocate for a moratorium on new applications to bottle water.
AWA's co-convenors are:
Mike Currie and Liana Kelly
Members include:
Queenstown Lakes District Councillor, Niki Gladding Niki talks water bottling with Tim Lynch
Marine mammal advocate, Genevieve Robinson
Christchurch lawyer, Peter Richardson (N.B. Peter is not paid for his services as instructing solicitor)
Peter at the 2019 March for Water
Media
Christchurch City Council funds AWA
Cloud Ocean Water in Growth Mode
Water Bottling hiatus Urged as Cloud Ocean touts growth
NZ Councils pass remit to advocate for a moratorium on new water bottling consents
Huge thanks to all who have supported us with your skills & donations & good wishes over the last 3 years.
You are all amazing. KEEP FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT!
