About

Manukau's First Co-Working, Events And Maker Space

Project 2018-07-26 17:01:06 +1200

We are Pioneers!

Te Haa o Manukau is Manukau's very first co-working, events and maker space, designed for entrepreneurs, creators, innovators and makers, led with tikanga Maori (values) and polynesian flair.

Located in the heart of the Manukau CBD, the doors to this courageous new space open (fingers crossed) in early September, and it's our job at Ngahere Communities to cultivate a thriving, connected community that fills this new whare, and breathes life into our city and our people.

Maori and Pasifika people are amongst the most creative, courageous and entrpreneurial in the world, yet we're plagued by the statistics of suicide, drug abuse, poverty, incarceration, mental health, homelessness and violence.  We've had enough, we've had enough of being hopeless, lifeless and stereotyped, we are here to bring back the pioneering sprit that embodied our ancestors, to live with curiosity and courage, to push boundaries and create our own ways forward.

We are Pioneers!

How we got here

Te Haa o Manukau is a flagship project of The Southern Initiative (TSI) in collaboration with Panuku Development Auckland and Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), via GridAKL. The space aims to spark entrepreneurship, grow innovative ventures and equip young people, in particular Māori and Pasifika with the skills needed for the future.

TSI then needed an 'operator' to come into the space, manage the building, build a community, facilitate the activities needed to see it thrive, and of course to pay the rent. This is where we come in.

See when the big guys like Auckland Council decide to invest into projects like this, they usually also choose an operator thats a bit of a big guy too, think the likes of Biz Dojo, Generator or the B-Hive, but this time around TSI paved a way for a local, Manukau based operator to step in, so we put our hand up and said we'll give it a go.

It has been one of the toughest things we've ever had to do, facing up to Councils super rigid, extra thorough and well resourced procurement process, doing proposals and presentations and financial forecasting and back flips, well not actually back flips, but it was a tough process for a little start-up company to go through. And we are so proud to say that we made our way through and are now embarking on this dream of ours to see our people, Maori and Pasifika, in our community, follow their dreams and fulfill their potential!

We, Ngahere Communities, are a Manukau based social enterprise, our purpose is to cultivate communities that enhance creativity and innovation by using collaborative spaces, common values and co-designed programmes.

So here we are, with an incredible 2 floors in one of Manukau's prime locations, partially fitted out, and a dream for what could be.

And here we are also as entrepreneurs, dreamers with nothing but a handful of seeds and a field full of soil.  This project requires at least $150k of investment from us if it's going to succeed, we need furniture and other things (like a microwave to cook our noodles) and compliance, so much compliance, and we need staff, who need computers and phones, and we need wifi and power so people will want to work here, the list goes on... but we know that the handful of seed we have isn't enough for the whole field, not yet.

That's when we thought that you might want to throw a few seeds in with us too.

We've done our homework, far out did Council make us do our homework, and we know that this venture will work, and we've put everything we could on the line to raise as much of that $150k as possible, and we've done good.  Now we just need the last $65k and we are off and running, well, walking at least.

Everything we raise in this campaign goes towards us moving closer to our dream, changing our, and many others realities while we're at it.

Our plan

Ngahere is the Maori word used for forest, but its meaning is even cooler.  Nga=many and here=strands, bonds, cords or connections, so it describes the interconnected ecosystem that makes up a forest.  That's why we chose it as the name for our enterprise, because we believe in the potential of connected, collaborative communities to bring about change that benefits all who are involved.

At Ngahere @ Te Haa o Manukau we'll start to build this ecosystem with four focusses:

Co-Working

A shared office space designed by and for Maori and Pasifika entrepreneurs.  A range of packages are available from hot-desking for a day through to permanent residents with ethernet connection and 24/7 access. We are aiming to attract the new breed of entrepreneurs forging paths in the world of tech and innovation.

Events

A whole range of moments that bring our community together and celebrate our successes.  From workshops and learning exchanges, meet-ups and labs, to awards and launches, exhibitions and pop-up stores, we can't wait to make this a hub of pioneering vibes.

Creator Studio

Digital content creation is the future (well it's the now) of everything.  Social media, online platforms, streaming and even gaming, everything is available online, and those who create content have the ability to reach the world!  Most kids these days don't watch TV, they watch the internet, you ask a 7yr old what they wanna be when they grow up, they'll probably list YouTuber as one of their life goals.  We're going to make the space, have the gear, and wrap business support around this generation of creators and entrepreneurs to step confidently into the online business world.

Makers

The skills needed for work, and for our future, are changing, and we're struggling to keep up.  As part of TSI's City of Makers strategy, we will facilitate the co-design and delivery of a Maker Skills Progamme aimed at trainee, apprentice and skilled makers learning what they need to get those good jobs, and make those huge innovations.

Our money plan $
Staff 20,000
Fitout 27,000
Keeping the lights on 10,000
Rewards   8,000
Total 65,000

You can't row a hearty waka on your own.

To quote our friend Vinnie Egan from Maui Studios (Check out his full korero here)

"Valuing people, that's what it's all about, it's the people around you that define how far you can go, like you can't row a hearty waka all by yourself!"

And we 100% believe that is true.  We can't do this on our own, we don't want to do this on our own.  We have just under three years in this building to prove ourselves, to cultivate the community we're dreaming of.  Whatever you can do to help, whether it feels like a little or a lot, it all makes a difference, and we're just so stoked to have you in our waka!

We definitely think that this is only the beginning for us, once we find our feet and get our heads around this type of community building enterprise model, there'll be nothing stopping us.  We're coming for you Aotearoa (not yet, but soon - LOL)

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your contribution. And we'd also like to ask if you could share this throughout your networks, Social Media, write it in the sky, anything you can think of actually, it would mean heaps to us. We updated our campaign target... 3 days left!!!!

25/09/2018 at 2:03 PM

We're almost there!

We just have three days to go to reach our target, one last push to get there.

BUT - we have news for you... We have reduced our final target to $40,000

This isn't something we did on whim, we've been discussing it for weeks now, and for a few reasons we decided to lower it:

  1. We have new partners... thanks to the exposure our campaign has given us, we have a few new partners we are working with, bringing us some new financial opportunities.
  2. We'll reach our target outside the campaign... even though we're lowering the total amount, we're still going to reach our original target through these new partnerships.
  3. We're running out of time... and with the amazing new partners that are coming on board, we didn't feel good about rushing our partnership agreements to fit into this Ta Koha timeline, so we decided to remove the pressure and allow the partnerships to be well developed.

But we've still got a bit of work to do to reach the $40k in 3 days, so if there's any way you can help us by convinving just one other person to koha to our kaupapa, that would be huge!

Thanks again for your amazing support to see something incredible happen here in Manukau

Arohanui,

The Ngahere Communities Whanau

More time to #GrowAtNgahere!!! Campaign extended till 28 Sept.

04/09/2018 at 11:37 AM

Kiaora everybody!

We're so happy to tell you that yesterday (Monday 3 Sept) we opened the doors to Te Haa o Manukau, our co-working, event and maker space in Manukau!  It was a soft opening with a few of us co-working together, and then a few celebration drinks to end the day.

The official launch party is now being planned for October, and we'll confirm the date and details very soon so you can get in there with the VIP Tickets!

-

But our main news to you, our amazing followers and supporters, is that we have decided to push out our campaign date to 28 September, giving us two more weeks to reach our funding target.

WHY?  There's a few reasons why:

  1. Our team have been flat out working on getting the building up and running, and the doors open, that we feel like we now have some proper time to put into our crowd and our campaign.
  2. For some of our rewards, it takes businesses and organisations a bit longer to go through their processes before they can commit - eg. a  comitment to 12 month office space isn't a small decision - so we're allowing a bit more time for a couple of our potential new tenants and funders to do what they need to do.
  3. We also have a couple of very cool opportunities we're working on, that means we could have a couple of new rewards to add very soon - we'll let ya know!

-

Thanks again for your amazing support.  Please continue to tell your friends and connections about our kaupapa, every koha helps, even $10

-

Much aroha

Welcome Aboard! Our Tribute to YOU.

29/08/2018 at 8:17 PM

You are now part of the team! Thank you so much for jumping on board our waka and helping us to take this opportunity to the next level. This is our small tribute for your support so far!

Located in the heart of the Manukau CBD, the doors to this courageous new space open next week, and it's our job at Ngahere Communities to cultivate a thriving, connected community that fills this new whare, and breathes life into our city and our people.

Momentum is building and we would love you, our team, to proudly share this update so that we can have more people join our journey!

But we've still got a bit of work to do to reach the $40k in 3 days, so if there's any way you can help us by convinving just one other person to koha to our kaupapa, that would be huge!

Thanks again for your amazing support to see something incredible happen here in Manukau

    Much aroha

Located in the heart of the Manukau CBD, the doors to this courageous new space open next week, and it's our job at Ngahere Communities to cultivate a thriving, connected community that fills this new whare, and breathes life into our city and our people.

Momentum is building and we would love you, our team, to proudly share this update so that we can have more people join our journey!
