About

Africa Fashion Festival New Zealand

Project 2014-02-12 15:36:43 +1300

Africa Fashion Festival New Zealand is an annual festival that celebrates Africa’s vibrant and diverse culture and incredible creativity in New Zealand (NZ).

Africa Fashion Festival NZ is set to promote, educate and highlight Africa's creative industry by giving participants one of a kind experience and a different perspective of the continent of Africa. An important focus of this event is the promotion of top and emerging African designers and artists and empowering first and second generation Africans in New Zealand to connect with, embrace and proudly share their culture.

A key differentiator of Africa Fashion Festival NZ is that, it is an ethical initiative with a development focus - think “fashion for development!”

By supporting this initiative you will help advance three great causes:

  • a mentoring programme for young African women in New Zealand to empower them to be more engaged in the community
  • a 3-month internship for a talented African fashion design graduate to intern with of the Africa Fashion Festival NZ participating designers in New Zealand and/or Africa
  • the launch of our book club initiative with schools in the participating designers home country.

I am asking you to please support us to raise funds to pre-launch Africa Fashion Festival NZ in May 2014.

Budget for pre-launch function in May 2014

Our target is to raise $5,000 towards the pre-launch function to get sponsor on board for the major event in October 2014. The money we raise will help cover the cost of pre-launch venue rental, marketing and promotion, and website-associated expenses.

Africa Fashion Festival Project team

Founder – Pinaman Owusu

  • Pinaman Owusu, Founder - I have a strong interest in public policy, philanthropy and fashion. In 2011, I launched a social enterprise organisation ADJOAA which offers an avenue that combines all three passions to give emerging African designers and artists a platform to showcase their talent to give them a foothold in the creative industry.

  • I believe fashion, music and dance are great art forms that enrich our experiences and challenge our deep-seated assumptions. I hope Africa Fashion Festival NZ provides an outlet for all New Zealanders to experience the cultural richness and incredible artistic talent from the diverse and vibrant continent of Africa.

Creative Director – Kieran Stowers

  • Kieran Stowers, Creative Director - Kieran Stowers is an award-winning Graphic Designer from Wellington, New Zealand. Kieran recently completed his Masters in Design from Massey University College of Creative Arts, where he works as tutor in Visual Communication Design and as Designer at OpenLab, and in-house studio within the University working with industry partners. See more of his work at kieranstowers.co.nz

Advisor – Michele Marius

  • Michele Marius, Advisor and Lead Cheerleader - my background in is telecoms and ICT, but I am experienced in managing people, resources and projects. Having lived in a few countries around the world, including New Zealand (where I met Pinaman), I have an appreciation of the immigrants experience, i.e. loss of connectedness to one's home country that inevitably occurs, and tends to be even more evident among first and second generation descendants.

  • With regard to Africa, although we might be aware that it comprises a number of countries, many of us, and especially first and second generation African in New Zealand, have had limited exposure to the diverse heritage, ethnicities and cultures that is Africa. In some small way, the Africa Fashion Festival New Zealand is hoping to change that, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.

Qutoe from guest designer, Sophie Zinga (Senegal)

''This year I have been approached by many fashion weeks around the world to participate but I have turned down all because I am focusing more on my brand and less on co-branding with other fashion week and entities. Your project seems very promising and I would love to be part of it.''

Less than a week to go! How exciting is this? I can’t believe it been almost four weeks already? We are so close to reaching our target I can even smell!

In exactly 6 days our pre-launch campaign would have ended and you'll be receiving a message of some sort from me.

We haven’t far to go to raise the shortfall to take this baby home so please keep asking  your beautiful and handsome friends and family members to support me. Get me to the finish line for this leg of the raceJ

Did I say how freaking fabulous you all are?  If you didn’t know, now you know (I can hear a song coming onJ - Norman Hutchins).

Now get me over the finish line.

Have a glorious weekend with you and your:)!

Somebody pinch me! I am over the moon with how far we've come with the pledges. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone for your donation. I am sincerely blown away by your generosity. I have had a lot of good shocks to the system just from keeping up with progress of the campaign.

I must say I have loved every one of them (i.e. good shocks) so keep them coming! Or at least ask your friends and families to support so that this goodness continues :).

Apologies for being a bit slack with updates on pledge me. I have been focusing more on the facebook end and spicing things up with the odd stalking of colleagues at work to try and get them to Pledge Me :)! Believe me it has worked fabulously!

In other news, I have been working tirelessly to woo other major sponsors. It is by no means an easy feat. I’ll keep you posted on our progress on that front.

Stay bless!

Pinaman
