About

Riccarton Community Garden + Pātaka Trust

Project 2023-11-13 08:13:57 +1300

The Riccarton Community Garden + Pātaka has been running for over a decade, helped set up by the policing unit and a number of volunteers, including Nick and Loretta Te Paa just after the 2011/12 earthquakes. Both initiatives are thriving and providing food to community members at a time of increased food insecurity and higher living costs.

The pātaka (pantry) has additional costs for running in 2024. We need your help. Our fundraising request is to cover the costs for Food Bank donations with a minimum donation goal of $2500. In total, $5,700 is needed to cover the weekly supplies for the year based on our current uptake by the community.

If we are able to raise up to $10,000, we can cover the additional costs (petrol for pickup, energy costs for lights and refrigeration, garden supplies and administrative costs). If we raise more than $10,000 we could consider needed renovations and improvements to the garden + pātaka.

The garden and pātaka are run by a dedicated team of volunteers. who donate their time to support food security within their community. Please help us in providing this needed community resource.

Both the pātaka (26 Piko Crescent, Riccarton) and garden (18 Dilworth St, Riccarton) are closed this week while the team tries to source a new food distributor after the closure of Foodbank Canterbury.  We'll update when they're back open and looking for more volunteers!

Continuing this work

12/02/2024 at 8:33 AM

Kia ora koutou,

As our PledgeMe hours wind down, it doesn't look like we'll be able to reach our minimum donation goal. We are incredibly grateful to those of you who have pledged support and will let you know other ways that you could support the garden and pātaka directly, even if not through the PledgeMe platform.

It has been an ongoing struggle to source another foodbank, but the team hasn't yet given up. The garden continues to grow and thrive and we remain hopeful the pātaka can return to its regular opening hours in the near future.

We will provide another update soon with further details on how to support this amazing group in promoting food security within the Riccarton community.

5 days left!

07/02/2024 at 3:40 PM

Hi all,

The time is now to spread the word! We've only got 5 days left to raise over $1500. Please share the link with your networks to support this group who is trying to keep up their fight of food insecurity in Riccarton. Big or small, any donation will help us get over the line.

Thank you for your support!

closure this week due to ill health and still searching for a new food distributor

17/01/2024 at 7:57 PM

Unfortunately, the pātaka remains closed until a new foodbank can be identified. With high heat forecasted for Saturday and viruses taking a toll on the group, we'll also have to keep the garden closed on Saturday. Hoping for some better luck next week--we will let you know!

But the donations drive continues.  Your donations help us continue with this mahi--so please spread the word!

extending the campaign--4 more weeks to give!

10/01/2024 at 11:41 AM

Kia ora koutou,

Wishing everyone a very happy and healthy 2024! During the holiday season, the team has taken a bit of a break so we're extending our campaign for another 4 weeks.

That doesn't mean we don't need your support. In fact, we need your help now more than ever. Food prices remain incredibly high and the pātaka team has been scrambling to identify new food sources given the closure of Foodbank Canterbury.

The time to help is NOW! Every little bit counts.

Please spread the word, support your local community, and ensure everyone has access to healthy, affordable food this year.

break for the holidays

31/12/2023 at 10:48 AM

Wishing everyone a relaxing and joyful holiday season!

The pātaka volunteer team has taken a well-deserved break these couple of weeks. You know who hasn't stopped working? The lovely garden, which has been growing at a rapid pace with all this sunlight. We hope you all are enjoying the long summer days as much as this lettuce!

A very happy and healthy 2024 to all of our pledgers and community!

end of year feast

18/12/2023 at 8:10 PM

On Friday the garden and pātaka team hosted a luncheon for its volunteers and supporters during 2023. Some of these yummy broad beans at the garden even made their way into the delicious spread of food.

Thank you to all supporters so far, but we still have a ways to go with donations so please help spread the word!

trees for naming

13/12/2023 at 6:04 PM

The Pātaka team have secured supplies to the end of the year, but we need your help for 2024!

We've got 5 trees up for naming rights. Just imagine it as the perfect gift for the difficult person to buy for on your gift list.

Your great Aunt Nancy?  Nancy Nectarine!

Your second cousin Abel? The Abel Apricot tree!

The options are endless. Names don't require alliteration--only something we can publicly post on our Facebook page. Pledge $100 or more and the tree will have your name for life. Here are some pictures of the saplings to choose from: 2 nectarine trees, 1 grapefruit tree, 1 apricot tree, and a plum tree. This reward is only available until our 5 trees have names. This is one time only--get them before they're gone!

Foodbank Canterbury closure

08/12/2023 at 10:12 AM

The pātaka received some difficult news this week that Foodbank Canterbury, Christchurch's largest foodbank and the primary source of pātaka goods, will be closing just before Christmas. This has left the pātaka team scrambling to get on other foodbank lists and to come up with alternate plans.

Now more than ever, we need your help! No donation is too small and please share with your family and friends.

We will update again when we know more about next steps. Thank you for your support!
