Help Us Give Young Adults With Learning Disabilities An Equal Opportunity To Learn To Read!
Project 2021-03-16 15:27:24 +1300
Everyone deserves the opportunity to learn to read! We are Anne Russell and Rosemary Emery. We are special education specialists who work with special needs young people and their teachers.
We were constantly being asked about appropriate reading material for older students reading at a low level level (5, 6, 7 year old reading age). We searched in NZ and internationally and realised there was a real gap. We created our business Off The Page and developed 42 ebooks (14 at each level). The ebooks comprise photos of young people doing interesting things such as surfing, playing in a band and working in a cafe, with text pitched at the correct level. These are currently available for purchase from the Off The Page website. The aim of this project is to convert 12 of these ebooks into interactive apps (4 stories from each reading level). Advantages of an app for special needs students over an ebook are: They are interactive and engaging The swipe to read, tap and double tap features provides students with a literacy learning tool The stories are ‘one click away’ - on any device with no need to wait for stories to download. They work for a greater range of learning styles They are fun and cool!
