Greenback: Measuring Your Climate Action And Rewarding Your Impact.
Project 2020-02-06 17:39:00 +1300
55% of New Zealanders express high-level concern around the impact of climate change on New Zealand.
Over 170,000 New Zealanders protested in 2019 for bold action on a climate crisis– how do we take that commitment further?
Greenback NZ is developing the Fitbit of climate action, easily measuring your emissions, providing suggestions for small changes you can make and then rewarding those actions with Greenback credits.
You’ll be able to spend those credits with companies who share your values and are equally invested in climate action. Or donate them to tree-planting charities and volunteer groups.
We know that getting more trees into the ground as soon as possible (while simultaneously reducing our emissions as much as we can) is one of the most important actions we can take. So, the first thing we’re doing is building the Greenbacking app. You can learn about our native and productive trees and earn points for collecting seeds and growing up seedlings, making extra cash for being part of a growing revolution.
We’re here to get our green back and support mass re-forestation and restoration of our bio-diversity.
Selected for Auckland Women 4 Climate
Accurate data on meaningful actions
Confused over what to do or how much it really matters? Feeling the effects of full-blown climate anxiety and a bit jaded? Decided that your individual agency doesn’t make a difference and it’s all just hopeless? Frustrated at the pace of change and waiting for big companies and governments to do the right things fast?
We get it. We formed Greenback to turn hopelessness into hopefulness. Sharing wins, measuring impact, rewarding change.
Greenback will bring together scientific information and technology to easily measure and report impact in all the important areas of climate action:
1. Transport
2. Food
3. Waste
4. Power
5. Greenbacking (personal offsetting through tree growing)*
We’re going to show you how that individual impact looks as a collective of committed Good Humans, all taking action together.
Recent science strongly recommends we reduce emissions by 7.6% every year for the next decade to give us the best chance of limiting temperature rises which put some of our most vulnerable communities in harm’s way, including many of our Pacific Island neighbours.
We think 7.6% is do-able, in fact we think 10% every year is fully achievable, easily. That’s because it all starts with you, Good Human. When you take action and make the planet-friendly choice in a world full of wants, we will measure it and reward that choice. Because it matters and when measured, it provides massive signals to companies and organisations in the form of market trends and customer needs.
Why do we need Greenback?
We believe it’s time to move from talking to doing – as urgently as possible.
1. We need to reduce our emissions now. This is a journey and we’re not going to get to carbon neutral economies overnight, but every small action you take counts and some have huge impacts on much bigger systems. We’re rewarding people because we think it’s a no-brainer for ongoing action taking and encouraging even the most ardent of deniers to get involved.
Want to make some extra cash for taking the planet-friendly option and being a Good Human?
2. We also need to re-forest, removing emissions from the system through sequestration. We’ve chopped and destroyed numerous eco-systems across the globe which ultimately also serve as our best defence in both mitigation and adaptation strategies. The value of a tree is not just its sale value when logged. A regenerating forest is an ongoing carbon sink, also offering improvements in water quality, shade and shelter, improving drought and flood resilience alongside its importance in supporting unique bio-diversity so vital for our ongoing way of life.We want to support everyone in Growing a Pair (of seedlings) making it fun, easy and rewarding to learn about our important trees, locate and identify them, collect seeds and grow seedlings. Whether you’re in an apartment or on a farm, you’ve got the space to Grow a Pair. We’ll hook you up with a way to sell, gift or trade your trees and again, show you what your contribution looks like and reward your efforts with Greenback credits.

What we have achieved so far...
July 2019 - Hacked it out at the first Climate-X weekend, sponsored by the Climate Leader's Coalition.
November 2019 - Greenback was selected as a project for Auckland Women 4 Climate, part of C40 Cities programme in actioning climate change.
January 2020 - Started build of Greenbacking app, focusing on support of climate change curriculum in schools. We're making it fun, solutions-focused and educational, alongside rewarding kids (and grown ups) to connect with nature and get involved with growing.
March 2020 - Testing in pilot schools across Auckland (and hopefully beyond) Please give us a shout if you're a teacher wanting to get involved and take part in initial testing at [email protected]
3rd April 2020 - Participating in post-climate strike Festival of Climate Action - signup at www.greenbackme.biz to stay updated on what we'll be up to.
Who are we...
Together we bring a wealth of experience in business, startups, behaviour change, tech R&D, human rights and movement building. We're collaborators, bringing in experts and leaders in field to advise and consult to ensure we're providing the most accurate data and information from a science based perspective.
Where will the money go?
Milestone 1: Build and Production of Greenbacking app - $50,000
Milestone 2: Full build-out of Greenback Hub calculating and rewarding planet-friendly actions - $250,000
Milestone 1: $50,000
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today.
Pledged funds will be used to complete the build of the initial Greenbacking app, focusing on gamifying education around native and productive trees, their importance and role in climate change action and supporting citizen-powered re-forestation.
We’ve been working on the design for a while, collaborating with schools and local authorities to support the implementation of the government’s curriculum on climate change in schools in a fun, solutions-focused way. We want to support communities of local Good Humans to be fully engaged in re-planting, monitoring and enjoying the awesomeness of our tree estates. We know you’re out there – we’ve spoken to heaps of you! 😊
We've gotten this far with under $5000 cold hard cash and a fortune in un-paid, hard work alongside the generous help of a variety of specialists and professionals over the last 18-months. $50,000 allows us to go hard and fast to get this app into schools and homes across New Zealand and the world - ultimately, getting our green back, faster.
Milestone 2: $250,000
Full build of Greenback Hub.
· Creating the one-stop climate action shop. Measure impact, suggest alternatives, reward action.
· Testing and validation, beta release.
· Full release.
Greenback Production
· Secure staff and office space.
· Sign-off partnerships with partner organisations.
· Continued research and development in technologies to support and promote sustainable choices, planet-friendly products and service providers.
Milestone supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: over $350,000 pledged
Expansion of Greenback
We believe that Kiwi’s care and are uniquely placed to show what our individual “can-do” stacks up to. 3.5% of the population is a magic number in creating change, particularly when it’s measured. We’d love to reach this milestone because it will allow us to bring in the experience and talent we need to build Greenback and launch it quickly.
The data collected from Greenback will provide a wireframe of information about the level of climate action throughout New Zealand and beyond, also feeding back to public sector organisations with aligned objectives in tackling climate change. The aim is to get us there faster.
This milestone will also allow Greenback to further develop additional technology solutions supporting climate action.
All profits from Greenback will be re-invested back into projects supporting climate action, with a focus on creating space for female and indigenous-led technology-projects.
This is a world first, created and designed in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We've been building!!
04/04/2020 at 9:40 AM
For the last 3 months we've been building our prototype for the first part of the GreenBack app - a game encouraging everyone to get out in nature, learn about our incredible trees and get growing!
So here it is! The video shows the functionality we're looking for in the game and how we want it to play out...allowing you, the player, to learn and report on the health of the tree and the bio-diversity you notice around it.
We have 9 days left of our PledgeMe campaign so are asking for your help to share our campaign far and wide through your networks. Thanks in advance Good Humans!
Stay safe and be well!

Ethique rewards Greenback supporters
24/02/2020 at 7:46 PM
We're made up that Ethique have kindly offered 5 of our supporters their trial pack as a reward for donating $50 to get Greenback up and running.
We made the switch to Ethique products and the whole family are stoked with the sweet smelling, palm oil and plastic free, totally vegan, climate neutral experience. The transition to solid shampoo and conditioner bars means we're actually consuming heaps less and reduces our spend (and footprint) as a family.
Ethique has lots of options, no matter what your skin or hair type and we can honestly say we love the end result of genuinely feel good hair.
Please share with friends and whanau that might be keen to support our campaign. We have lots more rewards and partnerships we're hoping to announce soon!
