The swamp

My name is Pukee "The Flying Ace".

I'm a New Zealand Pukeko (and cute) and the star of a children's book that my 63 year old author committed to paper about eight years ago (Oct 2007). He thinks that children of the age 3 to 6 will love to have this story read to them by Mums, Dads; Grand Parents or older Siblings or try to read it to themselves.

He is frightened that if he does not publish this book and bring me to life soon, that he never will and I will be left on the shelf (but not a book shelf) or in the "dark" in the bottom drawer.

I've been sqwarking at him for years to bring me to life.

Pukekos are considered native to New Zealand, but I also have long lost cousins in all over the world where we are called (purple) swamp hens or 'Rails".

While it is thought that my ancestors flew to New Zealand over the oceans from the islands or Australia some 1000 years ago, we are now quite lazy (that's not fair) and are now not very good flyers and that is my issue - "I want to be a better flyer like my ancestors". I want to fly high!

We are thought of as "clumsy" birds as we have big bodies (some say "dumpy") and smallish wings and although we can fly to get out of trouble (look out for that truck!), we quite often make spectacular "crash landings".

This story is about my desire to become a better flyer and to help others to be as well.

My team is:

Kerry Otto - Author and Manager of the "Dark Drawer".

This is the first book he has written. He has other characters in the drawer with me as well, but he told me he wants me to lead the way (I think he likes me the best).

The others are pushing me to get out on the "dark Drawer" so there is more room for them and maybe one day they will see the "light of day" in a book of their own.

During his normal work day, he helps people protect themselves with insurance but for a while, has been a "closet" writer of children's books - but just never had the confidence to get anything published.

Stephen Long - Chief Pencil Officer (CPO)

Stephen's "day job" is running a Startup Software Development company "SLACK Solutions" but he always enjoyed old school cartoons & hand drawn cell animation, so when the opportunity came up to bring me to life, he couldn't resist. I think he makes me look GREAT!.

He tells me one day, I might be a 3D model? That could be interesting, never thought I would be a model? So follow me on my Facebook "Pukee The Flying Ace" to keep up with everything going on in the swamp and the "dark drawer".

To date we have had quotes for printing and illustrations costs and we would like to print the first run of books and hpoe to have all pledges delivered for Christmas.

These books will be about 215mm x 265mm for 24 pages plus cover (28 pages all up) with full colour illustrations.

We also want to set up a web site so you can access future copies of books with some of the funds pledged.

I'd like to thank Kevin Smee and Amy Callon at Solutions for doing the video of my Author talking about the project.

Help me come to life as I don't want to stay in the drawer any longer (or go to the grave).

Pleeeease help me come to life!

Love Pukee The Flying Ace

How your total pledges will be used

25/11/2015 at 8:58 AM

I thought I should have given you all a breakdown of where the target pledge amount of $6,000 will be spent, if we are successful in reaching that goal.

  1. About $3,000 will be used to print 600 books locally at $4.95 per book. This is a little high but is due to the smaller quantity.
  2. About $2,500 will be used to pay the balance needed by Stephen Long to complete the illustrations.
  3. The balance of about $500 will be allocated to Pledgeme as their fee to support the project.
  4. To reach the total of $6,000 with pledges, will use about 250 to 300 of the 600 books printed.
  5. The balance of books will be sold over time using other forms of marketing - cold calls to book stores, maybe weekend fairs, sales through website (to be developed) etc.
  6. Book stores will want to have a margin of about 300% to sell these books, so will want a buy at a discounted price.
  7. The (minimal) funds from these additional sales will be used to cover these ongoing marketing costs.

I hope this gives you some idea of the split of the target

18 day report

29/10/2015 at 9:54 AM

Pukee has asked me to give thanks to all that have pledged to bring him to life.

He has been sqwaking about this for so long now, I don't know what I will do if we fail to reach the target.

Can I please ask you all once again to share the link with family and friends to see this project ends successfully without there being a pool of pukeho tears being spilt in the dark drawer; can you imagine how that would smell?

Thank you from me (as well) for your support to date.

Kerry O (on behalf of Pukee)
