Bring Evelyn To Aotearoa To See Her Film About Sorcery Accusation Related Violence In Papua New Guinea
Project 2024-03-16 17:56:26 +1300
Help us fly Evelyn from Papua New Guinea to Aotearoa to see her film about her life's work rescuing victims of sorcery accusation violence in a large event this July.
It is estimated that in Papua New Guinea, more than 200 people are killed as accused witches each year. One woman, Evelyn Kunda, risks her life to rescue and counsel those that survive these violent attacks with the only resource she has, compassion (marimari).
The feature film, Marimari – the Tok Pisin word for compassion – brings the shocking truth about sorcery accusation-related violence in Papua New Guinea to the world. The film follows Evelyn, a local human rights defender, as she rescues people who have fallen victim to sorcery accusation and gender-based violence. Evelyn does this work alone, while often in danger herself.
In 2022 you successfully helped us raise money to help Evelyn do her unpaid work rescuing those accused of witchcraft from torture and murder at great personal risk. While this allowed her to continue her work, we filmed our documentary MARIMARI, about how Evelyn's endless compassion for people drives her to do everything she can to fight the growing issue of SARV (sorcery accusation-related violence) in PNG, when at times this can feel like a hopeless task.
It's essential that we bring Evelyn to see her life's work on the big screen at the film festival, so she can see that people care, and she's not alone in wanting to help stop sorcery accusation related violence.
