About

The Year Of The Volunteer

Project 2013-03-20 03:57:10 +1300

This year I have decided to take a break from Uni and take an OE! However what I want to do on my overseas adventure doesn't involve contikis, working in a UK pub, or traveling with friends - it involves volunteering!

After I do my 3 months with Camp America, working in underprivileged camps, I hope to see more of the world through some of the volunteering projects POD volunteer provide. The first project I wish to participate in, is the Elephant Care project in Thailand. This will include - Feeding and giving water to the elephants Help with the cleaning of the elephant enclosures Hosing down and cleaning the elephants Going out approximately three times a week to harvest and collect food for the elephants from local farms - pineapples, bananas etc. Elephant volunteers also look after some other domesticated animals such as 'Sam', a rescued beach pony. By volunteering in this project I am able to gain awesome skills and experiences whilst helping the elephant welfare in Thailand.

The second project I wish to volunteer in is the Marine Conservation project, also in Thailand. This project will include tasks such as - Reef surveys (Ecological Monitoring Program) Biorock Coral Rehabilitation and Nursery Artificial Reef Construction and Maintenance Mid-water coral nurseries Mooring Buoy Installation Giant Clam Nursery Sea Turtle Sanctuary and Releases Land and Underwater Clean-ups Water Testing Underwater Mapping Erosion Control Awareness Campaigns By helping out in this project I am able to protect the island of Koh Tao, whilst providing a balance between nature and the demands that diving, tourism and fishing need.

The third and final project I want to experience is the Cheetah Reintroduction in South Africa. I have been warned by many that SA is a dangerous place but nothing can really stop my passion for these sorts of projects. This project involves - Cleaning cheetah enclosures Taking the cheetahs for runs Preparing the food and feeding the cheetahs Reserve Maintenance Creating fire breaks Removal of alien invader plant species By volunteering in this project I will be contributing to saving the future of the cheetah. That photo above is from the POD website and shows you who i'll actually be working with! Cool huh?

Each project will give me insight into other cultures. They will help me obtain what I find to be essential skills and life experiences I can hopefully pass on to others. Each project ranges in price, from around $1000 - $3000 for 2-4 weeks. I am hoping to raise enough to stay for as long as I can, at the moment I can only afford 2 weeks in 2 of the projects. I'm already working 4 jobs, (New World Deli, Orton Catering, Billy Burkes Bar, Hawkes Bay Racing) as well as selling my pre loved goods in order to raise some funds! However I have done my budgeting and will still fall short. It would be amazing if I could experience this all in one year, instead of having to go back when I have the money. Please help me out so I can help others out! Would be truly awesome to see the support of others helping me go on my big year of the volunteer!
