Dancing With Fire
Project 2013-02-04 23:49:03 +1300
The ancient art of Samoan Knife dancing, now Fire Knife dancing, is celebrated well outside of New Zealand with Competitions in Samoa, Tahiti and The World Champs in Hawaii. Auckland, NZ is the largest Polynesian city in the world yet the art of fire knife dancing is slowly becoming forgotten here. Without a platform to celebrate this art many older fire dancers have given it up and the next generation are not getting exposed to the practice
I am on a mission to change this! Having taught kids for most of my life I appreciate the positive effects teaching them a performance skill has on all aspects of their life. Samoan Fire Knife dancing is appreciated by all cultures, kids, no matter what ethnicity, take to this skill easily and feel a real sense of accomplishment as each new trick is mastered. And it’s not just for the young, I teach any age willing to learn the art along with dancing and drumming to be a well-rounded Polynesian performer. I have spent years working as a volunteer in the community, teaching and mentoring children and youth in cultural practices. I have used Fire Knife dancing to entertain at community and family events, fundraisers, creating excitement for the audience. Performing for the Blue September Awareness campaign for Prostrate Cancer was a highlight as it is a way to expose a new audience to the art and create a buzz for a great cause.
The best Knives for this art come from Samoa and cost upwards of $300 per knife. I lend people willing to learn the art my practice knifes but I am limited to only a few. I am asking for pledges to help me buy more knives so I can train with more people willing to learn the art. My time is free but unfortunately the knives aren’t!!
There are three free fire shows up for grabs to the top three pledges of $100 or more in the Auckland area. I will personally come fire dance at your special occasion, whether it is a wedding, birthday, hens night or work function.

Dear friends, thank you so much for your generous pledges, I really appreciate your support, especially your quick reponse.
The reason my time frame is so short is that I have a friend in Samoa now who is able to bring the knives into New Zealand before March (in 11 days)
