Humans of New Lynn:
A Photographic Exploration of Community
This project originated as a way to welcome this community based art gallery into the area, and has evolved into an powerful unifier, bringing people from the community together to celebrate the inherent diversity of this town. The resulting month long exhibition ‘Humans of New Lynn: A Photographic Exploration of Community’ will be a presentation of fine art portraits of people from or connected to New Lynn, portraying their personal stories in a warm and compassionate format. The exhibition is a way to make art, and community participation in the arts, accessible to young people and others who have perhaps not had the opportunity to have exposure to the visual arts.
I work as a social worker and child therapist, in addition to being a photographer. I often have my children, ages 10 and 12, accompanying me while working on this project. I hope to demonstrate to them how my time volunteering on the project can positively impact individuals and the greater New Lynn community.
I could really use your help! It is my hope and belief that the project will help encourage a sense of community and human interaction, as well as to positively impact the economy by increasing foot traffic and business in the greater New Lynn area. I’m looking for sponsorship toward costs from local businesses and individuals.
All donations will go directly to the cost of printing the portraits, and matting and framing for display. Every donation means one more photograph can be exhibited, to celebrate the beauty and significance of the individuals in the community. All my time taking the photographs, editing them and organizing the project is on a volunteer basis.
The gallery has a website and is very active with social marketing via Facebook and regular direct mail newsletters. http://www.upstairs.org.nz/. The exhibit will be in collaboration with the annual Auckland Festival of Photography.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read about this project! Kind regards, Tisha Carter
