Counterpoint 2013 Season!

Project 2013-01-25 04:41:17 +1300

WE HAVE REACHED OUR TARGET

BUT Still PLEASE pledge! The more pledges we recieve the more support we can give young artists to achieve their dreams!

For the following information in hilarious video format, click here

Counterpoint is a Dunedin based theatre company that aims to promote theatre amongst young people. In 2012 Counterpoint produced its debut show of Toa Fraser's Bare, which had sell out houses every night forcing the producers to extend the season. A review for that production can be found here.

In 2013 our aim is to put on six diverse and exciting shows providing acting, directing, designing and technical opportunities for as many as 100 artists, as well as running workshops with industry professionals and producing the performance works of other young Dunedin peeps.

Counterpoint is run by Alex Wilson (Dunedin Theatre Awards' 2012 Emerging Talent for directing) and Hadley R. Taylor (1999 North Taieri T-Ball, Most Improved Player) We've budgeted $3000 for our entire season. This will pay for venues, marketing, props, costumes, design, and performance rights. All proceeds go straight back in to funding more shows and opportunities. Our shows are based on a co-operative model whereby all collaborators receive a share of the box office of their show.

We are aiming for Pledge's to fund half our season, to get us up and running, with the second half of our season being funded by ticket sales, fundraising, sponsorship and artist grants. The details of our season are a secret squirrel surprise that you can uncover by Pledging to our cause! As we reach target goals, we will release our season details, as well as the individual rewards you will get by Pledging.

The Eight: Reindeer Monologues

By Jeff Goode | Directed by Caitlin McNaughton

It’s not all fun and games at the North Pole this year, as a tale of perversion and corruption unfolds. It looks like Santa’s been naughty, not nice, and the reindeer have something to say about it. Was Rudolph’s unprecedented promotion entirely innocent? Is Santa really as jolly as we’re led to believe? Are Vixen’s allegations against Santa true, or is she the real Grinch who stole Christmas? Join us for this dark comedy and your chance to see a real Christmas story.

PENULTIMATE REWARDS!!!

15/02/2013 at 5:52 AM

OOH LA LA!

One lucky, generous and notoriously sexy pledger has won a very romantic evening with one Hadley R. Taylor. Not only does this mean that love is in the air BUT also that we have stormed past our PENULTIMATE reward's barrier.

BUT before we get to that, as promised here is your collective reward promised in the last pledge, all I can say is that the above pledger is a lucky man...

So without further a do here is our fifth show for 2012

This Is Our Youth

By Kenneth Lonergan | Directed by Alex Wilson

“This is quite simply, a sterling example of why we keep going... this is our youth is as good as theatre gets.”

– The New York Daily News

In 1982, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the wealthy, articulate pot-smoking teenagers who were small children in the ‘60s have emerged as young adults in a country that has just resoundingly rejected everything they were brought up to believe in. In meticulous, hilarious, and agonizing detail This Is Our Youth follows forty-eight hours of three very lost young souls in the big city at the dawn of the Reagan Era.

Reward Blowout!

15/02/2013 at 5:15 AM

The Counterpoint Brothers feel like we are on the other side of summer and its Christmas time as overnight, we broke not one but two reward barriers!

The Mystery Reward is currently being finished off and should be revealed in a few days. It makes us feel a little peculiar...

But now it is time to reveal the identity of show Number 4 which is....

Moose Murders

By Arthur Bicknall | Directed by Abby Howells

“From now on, there will always be two groups of theatergoers in this world: those who have seen ''Moose Murders,'' and those who have not.” - New York Times.

Ten unlikely guests including the Holloway Family, a failed comedy double act and a suspicious caretaker are trapped in the Wild Moose Lodge during a storm. The group pass the time by playing a murder mystery game. However, real murder occurs and real mystery ensues. Is it the mysterious "Moose Murderer" returned from the dead, or something much more sinister? Moose Murders opened and closed on the same night on Broadway and has become the benchmark from which all bad Broadway shows are measured.

Sheep

by Authur Meek | Directed by Alex Wilson

“…amazing clarity…astute and inspired…a fascinating delve into our past.” –The Dominion Post

A sheep is merely a lamb’s way of making another lamb.

New Zealand is a nation born and bred into the agricultural mindset starting in a Canterbury whorehouse in 1863, and ending in Christchurch in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake - Sheep is a series of quirky snapshots of young people trying to make sense of their lives and this industry, both of which are dominated by increasingly complex relationships between technology and biology. Sheep asks whether these things exist to serve us, or we exist to serve them.

Box/Role/Dream

by Lynda Chanwai-Earle (NZ)

Directed by Erica Newlands

Dates: 7th-9th March

Director's Notes
Box/Role/Dream is about shifting the boundaries of your comfort zone to its outer limits. Perhaps, even, to a place you did not think you would go. Through a unique invitation into the personal lives of others, the audience is invited to consider their own perspectives and have their prejudices challenged. Chanwai Earle considers a natural response to awkward situations and then flips this on its head, back to an audience to consider themselves implicated in moments of personal revelation.

Playmarket Synopsis

A trilogy of tales: a man in a sauna reveals his violent past; a well-meaning woman learns that help on the streets isn't always wanted; a drowned sailor tells of the escape that didn't work as planned. A trilogy about the funniest and most tragic moments of three people's lives. A conversation in a sauna, an incident late Friday night in Cuba Street and a final moment on board the Mikhail Lermontov.
