About

The Barkery: Ōtautahi’s First [adoptable] Dog Cafe!

Project 2020-10-28 12:23:03 +1300

Kia ora! We’re Jack and Ally and we’re the co-founders of The Barkery - Aotearoa New Zealand’s first adoptable dog cafe and dog community hub!

We’re barking mad about the notoriously low dog adoption statistics in New Zealand - did you know only 12% of pet dogs in this country were adopted from rescues and shelters? This, combined with the need for Ōtautahi Christchurch to have a community hub for our canine companions, has led to the creation of The Barkery!

Simply put - we’re a dog cafe working to better the life of all canines in Christchurch. Can you lend a paw to help make it happen?

The Barkery is a physical premises where you can bring your doggo to enjoy a puppacino and a playdate, work with dog trainers, and host events (like your pup’s next birthday!). Core to our cause, we’ll also host adoptable dogs (in partnership with Dogwatch & Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue), offer the community the chance to support the shelters, AND we’ll be returning a portion of our profits to those we’re working alongside.

THE JOURNEY SO FAR

Since The Barkery’s launch in October 2019, we have tested our proof of concept with multiple ‘Pup-Up’ events, which have been hugely successful. Check out some of our media coverage on Newstalk, Newshub, Stuff, the Otago Daily Times, and others to learn more about the pup-ups.

We have solid, long-term relationships with local shelters Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue and Dogwatch, who support our plans and have been collaborative throughout our journey to date. We also have fantastic relationships with a range of pet-focused businesses in Canterbury and further afield, from individual makers to national brands.

We are fortunate to have secured a location for The Barkery in Christchurch’s Red Zone through Life in Vacant Spaces (LiVS), and are working with an architectural designer on the second version of our plans.

OUR VISION

Together we're creating something new and exciting for Christchurch, and we can't wait to meet you and your doggo at The Barkery! But first, we need your help to turn The Barkery from a pup-up into a permanent hub for dogs and the people who love them.

From exclusive merch to a Museum for Dogs to gorgeous dog-centred products and services, we’ve got something for everyone. Even if you don’t live in Christchurch, you can support the concept and remember the very good dogs in your life with a menu item named after them or their portrait on our Top Dog founders wall. Pledge, share, and spread the word to all the dog enthusiasts you know.

We’re aiming to open in April 2021, but we need to raise at least $50,000 to make that happen. But that’s just the beginning - every dollar raised above that goes into more and better facilities for our four-legged friends. $100,000 means we can open with a licenced bar ready to go and $150,000 means more outdoor facilities, like a Scent Den and cinema.

ABOUT THE VENUE & LOCATION

Christchurch has a few dog-friendly venues, but no venues dedicated to the dog-human experience. Our cafe will sit right in the Red Zone, with plenty of open space and indoor and outdoor seating. It’ll be completely dog-friendly, and while dog welfare considerations mean we won’t have adoptable dogs on site full time, our friends at Dogwatch and Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue say they’ll visit as often as they can! We’ll be showcasing current adoptable dogs with displays, digital signage, and plenty of info about the adoption process.

The Barkery is a space to foster connections not just between rescue dogs and potential homes, but dogs and people of all ages. We’ll offer a delicious human and canine menu, hireable spaces for trainers and for dog birthday parties, on and off-leash areas, and a full event calendar with everything from music and comedy to dog behaviour and training seminars. There’s also plenty for your dog to see and do while you enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine! Check out our concepts below for an idea of how The Barkery will come to life.

LOOKING LONG-TERM

Our long term vision for the Barkery? We’d like to see adoption become the first choice for everyone who wants to bring a dog into their family. We hope that by operating a thriving, exciting, and rescue-focused hospitality venue we can continue to raise awareness, raise funds, and provide an awesome experience for Christchurch ‘dog people’ at the same time. Should there be a Barkery in every city across the globe? Probably, but we're starting here.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will I be able to bring my own dog to The Barkery?

Yes of course! We’ll have a dining area dedicated to you and your pooch, as well as a Museum for Dogs full of exciting enrichment activities and an off leash park! When we have adoptable dogs on site they will be in a separate screened area. We will also have a safe space available if any dogs need to have some down time.

What if I don’t have a dog - can I still come?

Absolutely! In many ways the Barkery is the perfect place for you! We recognise that there are many barriers to owning a dog, so this is a space where you can get your dog fix, help dogs socialise with new people, and learn how you can help our local shelter networks and the dogs in their care! Just make sure you always talk to the owner before interacting with any dog.

Does my dog need to be on a leash?

Yes please! There will be dedicated areas within the Barkery where dogs must be leashed -  particularly as you enter, and in the dining area! The entry point will act as a briefing room where we can outline expectations, and explain the rules of engagement within the site. There will be, however, two off leash sections of the Barkery that will be monitored by staff for capacity and safety - this will be outlined and made clear upon entry.

Why the Red Zone?

The biggest segment of Red Zone users is, in fact, dog walkers. With an abundance of grassland and vegetation, this was the perfect place to create a space for Christchurch’s dog community. We adore Christchurch and have an amazing opportunity in conjunction with Life in Vacant Spaces to bring life back to the red zone!

Five days and $10,000 to go - we got this!

Hair band icons EUROPE sing their hit 'Final Countdown'

We have five days and just over $10,000 to go to reach our target before our campaign closes on Tuesday at 1PM. We know we can do it, but we need your help!

If you’re an Ethique fan (or just want to cut down on the plastic in your life), you can get their popular Pinkalicious shampoo for humans or Shampooch for dogs (or a gift pack with both) - tick an item off your shopping list while supporting an awesome cause.

Or, perhaps the dog lover in your life would like some sweet limited edition Barkery merch for the holidays? We’ve got t-shirts for people and bandanas for dogs.

And if you’re in Christchurch (or can be) next year, don’t forget tickets to our opening party - the perfect gift for your partner, parent, BFF, sibling, or crush. Is there a better way to spend time with your favourite person than a dog party? Maybe just VIP tickets to a dog party - fortunately, we have those too.

If everyone who’s already pledged shared with two friends or treated themselves to a little something extra, we’d smash our target. Can you lend a paw?

Cute dog break!

Jesse, a black and white short-haired collie mix, sits on a box in a sunny yard. Her mouth is open in a big smile and she's gazing cleverly at something off to her right.
Jesse is a clever, energetic, and adorable girl looking for her forever home. If you’re looking for a furry friend to keep up with your active lifestyle while you learn some new tricks together, get in touch with Dogwatch to meet Jesse.

Enthusiastic tail wags and face licks,

PS. Don’t forget to stop by Cashel Mall at lunchtime on Monday 7 December!

69% funded - it's party time!

20/11/2020 at 12:20 PM

A black and tan dog with very prominent erect ears sits against a blue wall, wearing a pink party hat and blowing one of those noisemaker things you get at parties.

We’re 69% funded!

Thanks to you 170 wonderful people, we’re sitting at $34,405 raised with 17 days to go. Don’t forget, we have to reach our target in order to receive any of the funding (and for you to get your rewards!).

Albus, a big shaggy black, grey, and white dog, is wearing cartoon glasses and looking at a copy of a newspaper featuring an article about The Barkery and a picture of himself.
Albus is having a hard time keeping up with all the media coverage we’ve got: check some of it out on Stuff, The Project, and RNZ.

Join the party

We’ve added some new rewards to the campaign, including tickets to our opening party. If you want to be there for the very first tail wags, butt sniffs, and puppacinos, pledge now to reserve your ticket. There will be food, drinks, music, prizes for best dressed (definitely dogs, and maybe we’ll let the humans participate too), and good times for everyone. Tickets are limited, so get in quick!

Cute Dog Break!

Jake, a black and white collie mix, stands in a lush field of grass, with a goofy smile on his face and his tongue lolling out.

Long time followers of The Barkery may remember Jake, a gorgeous boy at Dogwatch. Thanks to a very patient family and a lot of dedicated volunteers, we’re thrilled to announce that Jakey has been adopted by his furever family and is now living his best life as the 2IC on a farm. Jake touched a lot of hearts in his time and is a testament to the love that can come from taking the time to really connect with rescue dogs. We look forward to seeing Jakey at the Barkery sometime!

We can do this!

We’ve got two weeks left to smash our target (and hopefully hit one of our stretch goals!) - if everyone who’s pledged so far shared it with just a couple of other people, we’d be well on our way. Every little bit helps, so please spread the word with your fellow dog lovers.

If you’re keen to help in a bigger way, whether that’s events, connections to potential corporate partners or suppliers, or another idea, we’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line at [email protected]

Thanks again for believing in us and rescue dogs. We’re almost there!
