About

Darren Watson | Getting Sober For The End Of The World!

Project 2019-11-26 13:34:14 +1300

Hi, I'm currently busy recording my seventh solo album at my home studio in Ngaio, Lamington Recording.

Getting Sober For The End Of The World! (hey, it's a working title at this stage) is the planned follow-up to my 2018 album Too Many Millionaires. It will mine similar acoustic blues territory, although I promise both a longer and a slightly more diverse outing this time.

The core band is me singing and playing guitar with Delia Shanly on drums and percussion, and Steve Moodie on double bass. I will augment this with Dayle Jellyman on piano and organ, Terry Casey on harmonica, Craig Denham on accordion, and there's even talk of a small string section on a track or two! By recording everything at The Lamington I've saved big-time on recording costs. The plan is to release this one early/mid 2020 digitally and on compact disc.

Plans are also afoot for another NZ-wide concert tour after the huge success of the Too Many Millionaires NZ Tour in May 2018. How could we not after the great crowds we had last time 'round?!

What do we need from you? Well, while the cost of recording the music is minimal and a lot of the musicians involved are giving freely of their time, we still need to raise funds to pay for making the CDs and a few ancillary costs.

So the money will go on CD production, printing, postage, and the odd packet of the good stuff - loose leaf Dilmah tea. :-)

If we make any money over and above our target it will go on making an even better album and hopefully help us with promotion costs.

And that's it, folks. A new album on the way that I reckon you're gonna love as much as we enjoy making it. You can pre-order your copy right here or check out any of the other cool stuff we're offering as rewards for your pledges. Stuff like copies of previous albums to send to your friends, house concerts, come hear a track mixed, and loads more to come! In fact if you've got a cool idea for me to offer as a reward please let me know?

Even if you can't manage a pledge right now I'd really appreciate you sharing this around with all your roots music loving friends. Lots.

Thanks heaps!

Warning: The following is a bit of bragging about the last album y'all helped me make:

All in all, this is an enjoyable collection of timely tunes, with great performances all around, highlighting Watson’s soulful guitar playing and his powerful vocals. If you’re a fan of country blues done right, I think you might enjoy Too Many Millionaires. I know I did.
Blues Blast Magazine (USA)

Showing his measured approach to country blues, New Zealander Darren Watson takes on the moneyed class, deceitful politicians and two-timing lovers in the words to his well-drawn, engaging tunes, all eight respectable of tradition without seeming unctuous or archaic. There are, indeed, fresh qualities to his vocals and guitar work, and the resulting warm vibe can suggest Guy Davis’.
Downbeat Magazine (USA)

Anyone who thinks only Americans can authentically sing the blues should listen to this album by the New Zealander Darren Watson. It’s outstanding from beginning to end – the finest acoustic blues CD this reviewer has heard in quite some time.

Hi everyone

Well, New Zealand is at Covid-19 Alert Level 1 whcih means I can record with human beings again. We are planning to record the final track for the album next week. Since the last update I have organised shooting a new video and recorded a brand new track with Delia Shanly (and Rick Holmstrom 'via satellite' that will also appear on the record. Rick's part is utterly banging!

Obviously this whole Covid-19 thing has complicated release dates and any touring.

I will let you all know as soon as I have a release date and some shows booked.

Thanks for your patience.
