Westport Harbour Boat Sheds Revitalisation - Help Us Seal The Deal

Project 2019-10-30 12:15:54 +1300

Over the last 8 years, a group of Westport volunteers working under the Buller Cycle Club have been transforming some unloved and unused areas into a network of walking and cycling trails, bridges, boardwalks and public spaces. They have created the Kawatiri River Trail and linked it to their Kawatiri Beach Reserve at North Beach. Their efforts over this time have resulted in the 2013 & 2017 Trustpower Supreme Winner Community awards and the 2018 NZTA Bike to the Future awards. One of the key nodal points for this trail network is the Westport Harbour boat ramp area which acts as a central nucleus amongst 3 adjoining trails. The boat ramp area also supports the Westport Yacht and Powerboat club and the Kawatiri Rowing club and is a favourite place for locals to sit and view the port activity. Recently, the group embarked on a transformation of the boat ramp area with support from the Buller District Councils revitalisation fund, local volunteers and local businesses. The work includes resolving traffic interaction by isolating cyclists and pedestrians, improving car and boat trailer parking, creating new gardens and planted areas, building a large covered viewing pergola, improving signage, lighting and seating. The carpark area is just over 3000 square metres and is finished in compacted gravels. This surface deteriorates quickly with weather and tyre degradation so the group are very keen to try to get it chip sealed permanently before they finish the volunteer makeover and leave a lasting legacy for the its’ users. They have managed to scrape together $26,000 to put towards the $46,000 total cost and are working hard to find the $20,000 shortfall while they are still on the job. To be able to complete this work before the end of the year will pay huge dividends for its users, reducing ongoing maintenance, allowing for clearer parking hierarchy with the ability to paint lines on the seal and by bringing a huge amount of pride in the community efforts that have made it.
