Help Indigenous Youth Of Te Ara Whatu Attend The UN Climate Talks

“Thank you to everyone for the support and helping us reach our first target of $17,000!! We are overwhelmed by your support. The fundraiser will stay open until Sunday, additional koha will go towards our increased costs from the change of host location to Europe.”
In 2017 the first ever delegation to be organised, led and made up of indigenous youth attended the UN Climate Talks. Last year we returned to the mahi once more, helping to bring to life the first climate solutions platform co-governed by indigneous peoples and governments. This year we are continuing with this important kaupapa, travelling to Madrid, Spain for the 25th UN Climate Talks. The biggest barrier to ensuring indigenous youth are present in this talanoa/kōrero is money. Can you chip in to help us get there?

These are places to which we belong - the legacies handed down by our ancestors.
These are the places from which our mana is derived. This is our agency and our power, but mostly our responsibility as tangata whenua to pursue self- determination for those past, present and those still to come. Our knowledge systems have been created and maintained via thousands of years of co-existence with the environment. As temperatures change, and bio-diversity declines the reference points within our knowledge systems are changing. As sea levels rise, our fonua and the very atea of our marae are threatened with flood waters and we are called to stand in their protection.
Disrupt - Learn - Share - Connect
These are the intentions at the forefront of our mind. We have the blueprints for the future in our DNA. We have ancient stories that hold global solutions. We must use them now to protect those things which shape our identity, that make us who we are. Help us to achieve this mahi.
Who is Te Ara Whatu?
Te Ara Whatu is made up of rangatahi Māori and Pasifika from around Aotearoa. We connect to a variety of Māori and Pasifika communities and walk many paths, from storytelling to environmental planning, from campaigning to policy, and all things tangata whenua.
Our mahi is founded in enabling rangatahi Māori and Pasifika to generate the skills and relationships needed to take on the intersectional challenges that we have inherited, and will be facing in the future. Our vision is for rangatahi to lead the way in creating resilient, adaptable and self-determined indigenous communities - generating our own solutions based in our cultural knowledge and ways of living.

Where will the money go?
All fund raised go towards covering the cost of our flights, accommodation, travel insurance and local travel costs. Any extra will go towards making sure we have good kai to nourish us while we mahi. Total costs are approximately $4500 per team member.

COP25 moved to Madrid, Spain

Kia ora tātou,
The venue of COP25 has officially been changed to Madrid, Spain, following the withdrawal of the original host nation Chile 3 days ago.
We are pleased to announce that Te Ara Whatu will still be attending COP25. We are now calling for your support to help us get to Madrid, Spain so we can continue our mahi at this important platform.
Chile’s recent withdrawal as host of COP25 was in light of civil unrest, occurring in the context of ongoing human rights violations by the Chilean state and military. We stand in solidarity with Chileans and those around the world whose democratic and human rights continue to be compromised.
In this global context, and now more than ever, Te Ara Whatu believes it is crucial to centre social and environmental justice in international climate change decision-making.

Chile withdraws from hosting COP25

Kia ora tātou.
Some of you may have heard that overnight the president of Chile has withdrawn from hosting both APEC and COP25, which were intended to take place in Santiago, Chile. In the context of ongoing human rights violations by police and state military we support this stance, and stand in solidarity with citizens whose democratic and human rights have and continue to be compromised. We call on the Chilean administration to put an end to the state violence being imposed on the Chilean people. We hope that the withdrawal of the conference from Chile will allow leaders to focus their energies on their people and finding a just and peaceful way forward.
Te Ara Whatu has been keeping an eye on the unfolding events in Chile, and so this is not so much a surprise, as a complication. We are currently awaiting further updates from the United Nations regarding a possible change in venue. Until we receive confirmation of COP25’s ultimate cancellation, we will continue to adapt and prepare to attend the conference. Now more than ever, and particularly in the context of these and other human rights violations taking place across the globe, we want to ensure that indigenous voices are centred in bringing social and environmental justice policy into the collective consciousness of COP 25 attendees. So if possible, please continue to donate and share our crowdfunder.
Just to provide clarity, if the climate talks are ultimately cancelled and the funds cannot be directed towards their intended purpose, all donations will be refunded. We will continue to update you all as new information comes to light.
