About

Tackling Mental Health In The Workplace

Project 2019-07-14 16:06:28 +1200

The Idea

The Smile Initiative is a social enterprise aimed at raising awareness and empowering our workplaces to understand and manage their own mental health and assist others around them with mental illness and psychological distress to improve the mental health and well-being of New Zealand’s employees and their employers.

Every 15 hours a New Zealander will take their own life- this statistic is unacceptable. Approximately 50% of our Kiwis who have completed suicide were known to be in  employment. People are spending 2/3rds of their day in the workplace yet we often forget a person brings their whole self to work; emotions, sleep deprivation, worries and all.   We need to empower people to manage their own mental health and to be equip with the skills to help others in the workplace.

Our specific plans is to create a pay it forward policy in which an organisation can implement our programme and buy our products and as a token of gratitude we will be providing free first aid training, kits or workshops to the local community (i.e schools, churches, community centres) or small businesses that don’t have the capacity to otherwise receive this training.

Our slogan is ACE it! Awareness--Compassion--Empowerment all key features to improving mental health in New Zealand

 What we offer

·         ACE courses- Basic Skills and First Aid in Mental Heath - up- to-date New Zealand specific statistics and evidence based information

·         ACE Kits - New Zealands first Mental Health First Aid Kit!

·         Practical Workshops including Sleep hygiene, Stress & burnout and distress and de-escalation techniques

·         "Paper Therapist" – Evidence based self-directed therapy workbooks based

 The Mission

Our aim is to create the first New Zealand mental health tick/ stamp of approval for the workplace to ensure that workplaces are safe and responding to the mental health and wellbeing of their staff. We have a vision in which a company will obtain a "Smile" once it has enough trained staff to recognise and respond to mental health issues within the workplace and for that smile to represent that they are deemed a psychologically safe workplace.

Who we are

Olivia

Known for her loud voice, enthusiasm and goofy humour. Currently working between inpatient and community mental health settings including crisis work afterhours. James

Where will the money will go?

We have spent every last dollar of our own money ( yes out of our own pockets) and now we need your help to ensure this vision becomes a reality! We have chosen crowd funding in the hope Kiwis recognise how valuable our programme can be for workplaces all over New Zealand and that the potential to change and save lives.

We need at LEAST 20,000 ( which sounds like a lot, we know, but have a look below if you don't believe us!) but if we could raise even more than this would allow us to create even MORE workshops, training programmes and first aid kits.
