The Future Of Organic Education
Project 2019-06-10 20:48:38 +1200
The Biological Husbandry Unit (BHU), based near Lincoln University, has been operating since 1976 as an education and research facility for organic food production. With over 400 students armed with knowledge and applying on differing scales, the BHU already has an impressive legacy. The BHU has an opportunity, over the next 12 months, to set down a solid and independent foundation to become the home of organic education in New Zealand. We aim to educate the next generation of farmers in New Zealand, the generation that will lead us into a regenerative and bio-diverse future.
I am working to support an amazing team of diverse backgrounds and strengths:
Jon Manhire - Managing Director of The Agrobusiness Group and Chairperson of The BHU Organics Trust
Bill Martin - BHU Manager
Nicky O'Sullivan - BHU Admnistrator
Dr Charles Merfield - Founder of BHU Future Farming Centre
Bailey Peryman - BHU Organics Trust member and Co-Founder of Cultivate Christchurch
The BHU is not a new idea, it is the home of organics and already has 43 years of rich history. However, the continued presence and growth of the BHU is critical in our push for change to avoid a climate breakdown. The BHU holds and teaches the values and principles that will reconnect us with our past and lead us into a thriving future.
The team and the BHU have just secured a delivery partnership with Southern Institute of Technology to deliver organics courses, aiming to start in October this year. The money gained through the PledgeMe campaign will aloow the BHU to deliver these into the future with confidence and stability, plus create other educational opportunities for different parts of our community.
Being successful with this campaign is critical...it is an investment in a thriving and biodiverse future, where our communities hold a rich, deep connection with our land and water...a future based on care and love for our planet...

"Charles Norman Merfield It is a few weeks to the 25th anniversary of you arriving on our farm as a woofer in 1994. Your contribution to our farm and my family has been so important to me. The game now is to hand on the baton to the next generation. I look forward to working with you and George. Tim Chamberlain"
