Bootmaking Apprenticeship Opportunity Usa

Project 2019-04-26 02:40:09 +1200

Hey there, my name is Flora Knight and I am an aspiring bootmaker from Dunedin, New Zealand.  I made my first pair of shoes two years ago, and have been slowly developing my skills ever since.  I have been making shoes in my workshop that I renovated in my backyard. These shoes and boots have been mostly bespoke (custom fit and design) orders for individuals, some boots for a film, and I was also working odd jobs for a shoe repairer and at a shoe factory in Dunedin. There are some examples of my work to date at the bottom of this page.

In August this year I plan to travel to Guthrie, Oklahoma for a number of months to study under master boot maker Lisa Sorrell. An opportunity to study under an artist of this esteem is unparalleled in New Zealand! Lisa specialises in inlaid and overlaid cowboy boots of which I have a great interest in learning in depth about, and I also plan to travel around the US, attending workshops and meeting other shoe and bookmakers, and through these trips and this residency I hope to learn about everything from patternmaking, custom fit and orthotics, leather, design, material sourcing and the industry. It is my hope that I will return home and soon be able to start my own business of making high quality bespoke boots and provide a service that not only allows people to design their own shoes but also be available to those who have specific needs when it comes to footwear that a mass produced shoe won't give you. I can then share my skills with the shoe and bootmaking community in New Zealand.

Lisa Sorrell is an artist that I have admired for a long time. She has a youtube series called "It's A Boot Life" that I have followed and learnt a lot from over the last couple of years. When I decided that I needed more training I wrote to her out of the blue and asked what teaching oppurtunities she offered. She wrote back and said that she has an area of her workshop set up for apprenticies to come and work, and offered it to me without having ever met me. Imagine my excitement! She is not only an amazing artist, but also good natured, humorous, generous and gracious. All things I respect and admire in a teacher.

There are a number of reasons why this project is meaningful to me. Firstly, I love the work and the process. Shoe making encompasses a wide range of practical skills, and I like that it pushes my brain and body on a daily basis. The process of designing and creating something from scratch is incredibly satisfying, seeing it start to finish, something from nothing. Not only that but we are living in a time now where most of what we consume we buy cheap and throw away. It's mass produced, often poor quality, unethically produced and we often have no idea where it really comes from. As the world modernises we are swiftly moving away from aural tradition, of a master passing information and skills down the generation. True craftsmanship is falling by the wayside, and people with a rich knowledge and understanding of such crafts are becoming fewer and fewer. I hope to be a part of a movement where we can keep such crafts alive, teach and learn from one another, see the value in locally made, handmade products and be engaged with where our products come from.

I have a number of large overhead costs that I need to cover in order to get to Oklahoma and fund my study for as long as I can muster. The funds raised in this campaign will be used to cover return airfares from Dunedin to Oklahoma, materials for the period of study, internal travel to visit other shoemakers, workshops, and some living costs. I have saved some of my own funds, but the money raised here will see the project become a reality.

Any support will be gratefully received and I hope to be able to engage and support something that you are doing that you believe in, in the future!

lots of a love from a bootmaker in training,

Flora Knight
