Eat New Zealand Presents Talking Plates

Project 2019-01-15 09:18:04 +1300

Eat New Zealand is a collective of New Zealand's chefs, producers, media, tourism and event operators, who have all been inspired to create a national platform to promote and champion our best food, drink, and culinary tourism opportunities. You can learn about us at www.eatnewzealand.nz or follow us on IG: @eat.newzealand

Basically, we're a New Zealand Food Movement! Our vision is for New Zealand to become the world’s premium food destination. We have a major focus on supporting and encouraging sustainable food systems to get us to that goal. We believe we have a natural environment that supports these aims but we have to work together to protect it, and the food resources that come from it.

For that reason we’ve created ‘Talking Plates’. Talking Plates is a pop-up kitchen that will travel around events & festivals up & down NZ to dish-up discussion (and delicious food) to the public. We want to get people thinking about what they can do personally to change the way we grow/catch, purchase and prepare our food.

Talking Plates launched at Christchurch Festival Nostalgia on February 16th. Where we had three of that regions cleverest young chefs cooking for everyone; Alex Davies from Gatherings, Aliesha Gabrielle from Fresh Press Pizza and Carlos Rodriguez from 27 Steps. We started by focussing on three Eat New Zealand themes from our recent #FoodHui;

Food Resilience

A Sustainable Fishery in NZ

Locally Grown Grains

Our kitchen served up 4 dishes which to hero these topics; A fish dish which utilises the whole fish sourced directly from the fisher who caught it, celebrating The Kai Ika Project*. A dish that heroes Canterbury/NZ grown grains & a dessert featuring wild food or produce grown in community gardens.

We have some special ideas about how to make the ‘plates talk’ and this is what we'll be crowd sourcing for. The money will go towards design, signage, set-up, plates and tees as well as covering any food costs.

Support us and you can help create a sustainable future for New Zealand Food.

*The Kai Ika Project collects unwanted fish heads and frames and shares them with an appreciate local community who revere them for what they are, a true delicacy. For more info head to www.thekaikaproject.co.nz
