Stress and Anxiety: Issues in today's society
Mental health is a massive issue in New Zealand. Currently, New Zealand has the highest rate of teen suicide out of 41 developed countries around the world. We are tackling the issue at the roots by helping teenagers and young adults deal with stress and anxiety, which are two major causes of depression.
Our Story
We are six young men passionate about making a difference in our world. Passionate about improving the well-being of young people, in a way that youth relate to. We discovered a gap in the market for a youth-oriented App that is a one-stop place for everything a young person needs to help improve their mental health. Stress and anxiety are very large issues in today’s world, whether it be in the workplace, at home, or at school, it exists and everyone at some point deals with it. We have all dealt with it individually and have a passion to solve and help young people successfully get through the tough moments in their lives. Our idea is now a movement. A movement of positive change. A movement to help young people cope better with stress and anxiety. A movement birthed in New Zealand but captivating the world.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple. Strengthening mental health and wellbeing by providing a stress relief App designed by youth, for youth. We hope to reduce the number of people who are negatively affected by mental health issues.
Canvas, and what it is
Canvas is a unique mobile phone application to help youth deal with stress and anxiety. It will contain multiple features to ensure it’s most effective. Our top features include but are not limited to:
- Journals, which allow you to write about your day and basically acts as your diary on your Canvas account.
- Calming music that you can use to help calm yourself down when stressing out, or to listen and relax to. This music will be available to download for offline use.
- Guided meditation designed to help you meditate.
- Mobile games designed by us and brought to life by Putti Apps. These are fun and interactive games that will help you calm down and clear your mind.
- Activities such as yoga, mind games, and other neat tricks you can do that will help you relieve stress.
- Pictures and Videos for people who enjoy alternative methods of calming down. Users will be able to upload their own images and videos for other users to use.
- Motivating quotes and videos for people who just need a little push in the right direction or inspiration.
- Reliable Information about stress, anxiety and other mental illnesses. What it is, how to deal with it and how to help friends who deal with it.
We will also include the numbers of all national Helplines and New Zealand organizations that are here to help you if you need it. For example, Youthline, Lifeline, Outline. Connecting youth with organizations that they may never have heard of.
We realize we are just students, we’ve dealt with stress and/or anxiety but we aren’t total experts on this topic. This is why we’ve gone to local school counselors asking for advice about what we can put in the application and our current ideas and what they think will help. We’ve also talked to students and young adults in Auckland and around the North Island and asked them what they thought, and if they had any advice for us about what we can add in the application. This is how we came up with our list of features. We are also currently talking to Youthline and are talking about how we can help each other in terms of the content of Canvas, and support in terms of reliable information.
Canvas will be free on the app store for both Android and iOS and we aim for it to be accessible on all devices. Mental health is a massive issue in New Zealand. We are tackling the issue at the roots by helping teenagers and young adults deal with stress and anxiety, which are two major causes of depression.
Our Vision
During the conception of Canvas, we all sat down and discussed what direction we’d like to take the company. We quickly found that we all love helping people in one way or another. The direction we ended up taking is quite simple, we wanted change; change how people feel, change how people manage and deal with their problems. We want everyone who uses our application to feel better after using it. In short, what we want is a positive change in the not just the community, but the world and that change start here, with our app.
Prizes
Stretch Goals
Goal $60,000
We have a stretch goal of $60,000. With this amount, we can create a much better product with stress relieving games. We will also be able to advertise more to teenagers and young adults in New Zealand.
Goal $80,000
With $80,000 we will be able to develop a full mobile application on all main platforms (iOS store, google play store, etc). We will also have more funds to advertise Canvas.
Goal $100,000
With 100k we can make the application full with all top end features such as our games, dynamic and secure links with maintained and updated databases, a fast, adaptive and responsive backend API so that we can expand to other platforms if needed with minimal effort and the ability to open our API to 3rd party developers to make their applications and software work with ours. We will also be able to better fund our Canvas e-store and advertising.
