Tūmanako Wellness Centre – An Alternative In Mental Health Care

Project 2018-07-06 10:41:32 +1200

UPDATE: You will have noticed we have changed the target amount. This is in recognition of the feedback we have recieved from potential funders that they would like to recieve a complete Detailed Business Case as soon as possible. The decision to break down the funding into smaller chunks has not been made lightly, as we still require the larger sum of $200,000 and the team is working hard to secure this via philanthopic and grant funding. There is a diagram below that explains how we have split up the funding - we hope this makes sense, and thank you for all your ongoing support. If you wish to change the nature of your support, we understand.

Welcome! Thanks for joining us as we launch our Pledgeme campaign for Tūmanako Wellness Centre, an innovative, new treatment facility for mental health in New Zealand. Tūmanako is a partnership project with Ohu.

Who we are and what we’re doing

We’re a team of dedicated professionals from all kinds of fields, joining together to assist in combating the mental health crisis New Zealand is currently experiencing. Together, with your help, we’re creating a centre for sustainable mental health and wellbeing; the Tūmanako Wellness Centre.

Our vision is to create a sanctuary first and a psychiatric clinic second – that heralds in a new era of mental health care.

Our mission is to create an alternative in mental health care in New Zealand.

And our values are to Nurture, Respect, Discover and Collaborate.

Tūmanako will be unlike any other psychiatric facility. It will be a beacon for change.

A perfect opportunity, in a city rebuilding itself, to bring the world’s attention to Christchurch with;
• world-class, innovative mental health care
• patient-centred service
• a centre of world-renowned research
• stunning ‘living’ architecture that earns its keep

Tūmanako Wellness Centre will be a green, holistic, sanctuary providing nurturing and compassionate care that combines research and evidence-based traditional clinical and complementary therapy models of care in a calm, healing, nature-filled environment. An architecturally designed ‘living’ building to inspire staff and guests alike. Helping people with mental health challenges.

Joining forces to help solve a mental health crisis

New Zealand has the highest rate of youth suicide in the developed world. 1 in 5 adults will be diagnosed with a mental health issue at some time in their lives. Mental disorders are the 3rd leading cause of health loss for New Zealanders, Mental health presentations are up 72% since the quakes and Canterbury is in the grip of a chronic mental health problem. Government funding has not kept up with the demand. There is a current bed shortage for Christchurch mental health patients and the need far outstrips the supply of available services. What is available is under-resourced, over-burdened and possibly out-of-date.

Tūmanako Wellness Centre wants to help solve these problems.

And because the situation is so desperate, for so many, we want to get this started now - using people power, initiative and determination.

We’re great believers in community joining forces to create great things.

We want to bring the philosophy of a world-class spa retreat to a mental health and wellbeing facility, using world’s best research, evidence-based practice, and innovative tech, harnessing nature to nurture our guests, their families and carers, our staff and our community.

We want to build a psychiatric and mental well-being sanctuary that treats patients as guests, and that uses clinical psychology and psychiatric care combined with complementary therapies housed in a healing, ‘living’, self-sustaining building made from natural materials – with gardens inside and out for relaxation, culture, therapy and food production.

This will be unlike any hospital you have ever seen. That’s the point.

The Treatment Gap

Our Story

The idea for Tūmanako began in January 2017. I’m Marcelle, Tūmanako Wellness Centre’s founder and project lead. Let me take a little of your time to fill you in on how it all started by watching our Story of Origin.

So fast forward to a year or so later…

It is no longer “I’, it is “We”. I’ve partnered with Ohu to deliver the project and we now have an incredible team of local and international professionals, luminaries in their fields, working with great dedication and passion to bring Tūmanako Wellness Centre into being. Mental health experts, Doctors, Professors, Lawyers, Accountants, Property Developers, Urban strategists, CEOs, Councillors, Business people, Construction experts, Builders, Architects, IT experts, Designers, Filmmakers, Journalists and supporters from all walks of life keen to make this a reality.

We’ve come a long way, and have a robust Business Plan in place.

But now we need to step it up and take it to the next level. We need to pay the right professionals to robustly test and endorse the feasibility study so that we can use this as our key to unlock and secure capital investment in what we know is a viable business model. It has to be, because the better the business, the more people we can help. And that is our aim – to help solve this mental health crisis and give the people of Canterbury, our community, hope for holistic and sustainable mental well-being.

We want to provide an alternative in Mental health care for the good of New Zealanders.

If you want to read more about our backstory and the people invovled you can go to our website.

Our Solution

Here’s a little more detail on how we aim to help curb this mental health crisis and offer an alternative model of care.

The centre is built on five pillars;

HOLISTIC & SUSTAINABLE
• a centre providing values based psychiatric and psychological care while treating patients as guests
• the centre is focused on providing services that enable emotional, mental and physical wellness
• the building design and operational model will be environmentally, socially and financially sustainable

NURTURING & INCLUSIVE
• the centre will provide compassionate care that acknowledges and values clients, family and their caring communities/support networks
• the centre will grow and provide nourishing food and offer complementary therapies (yoga/mindfulness/massage/acupuncture/
reiki/naturopathy/gardening, art and music therapy)

INSPIRED BY NATURE
• the centre will be a modern, architecturally designed, calm, green, nature-filled sanctuary
• the centre will be a place of healing where the environment contributes to our guests’ wellbeing
• harnessing nature to nurture our guests through the use of functional foods and micronutrients

DRIVEN BY RESEARCH
• the centre will be a place of knowledge production
• the centre will have an inspirational workforce that attracts the best minds, clinicians and practitioners

TECHNOLOGICALLY INNOVATIVE
• the centre will use cutting edge technology to advance the model of mental health care
• technology will be used to treat, connect and educate our communitie\

What is next for Tūmanako

15/08/2018 at 11:21 AM

Monday 13 August, 2018

Dear Tūmanako supporters

We wanted to write to you firstly to thank you all for your continued support of this important project.

We’d now like to share with you our next steps following the end of our PledgeMe campaign, as well as some lessons we’ve learned along the way.

It’s been a huge year for the Tūmanako Wellness Centre project. We’ve added so many people, skills and knowledge to our ever-growing team and we’ve come a long way from where we started.

As you will be aware, we didn’t make our target on our PledgeMe Crowd funding campaign. We are of course very disappointed but not disheartened. We’ve taken the opportunity to regroup and decide on our next steps, which are outlined below.

We chose crowdfunding when it became apparent that more traditional sources of seed funding were going to be hard to attain without some more work on the business case, and this remains a challenge when we are doing things differently.

We launched this campaign with the goal of raising the first round of funding through our crowd, which was an ambitious undertaking but one we went into with full enthusiasm. The campaign kicked off with an amazing concert at Blue Smoke, in Christchurch - it was a very special event which we’ll remember for a long time.

We learnt a lot over the course of the crowdfunding campaign, and there were so many positive outcomes that we’re very proud of. We have contributed to a very important conversation, created strong brand awareness, gained mainstream media coverage, collected supporters and discovered that there is a huge demand for an alternative in mental health care.

We have also learnt that Tūmanako is a challenging community project because of the sometimes contentious nature of the change we want to see, the complexity and scale of such an audacious project, and the relationship with the current public health system. These lessons have been so valuable in planning the next steps for the projects.

So what next? In the immediate future we will be

·        Running a Tūmanako stand at the GP Conference, South GP CME 2018 16th to 19th August with Professor Julia Rucklidge and the Mental Health and Nutrition Research Group from the University of Canterbury

·        Preparing a investor pitch pack on the investment proposition / opportunity

·        Pursuing major philanthropic donors and grant funding opportunities

·        Continuing the development of the Business Case which will include the preliminary financial modelling and operational design

·        Attending the Living Buildings Regenerative Practitioners course to assist in preparing the preliminary design brief

·        Finalising the Trust Deed

·        Continue discussions with potential Trustees

·        Review the findings from the Government’s Commission of Inquiry into mental health, and explore potential partnerships with both the Canterbury District Health Board and Ministry of Health.

These next steps will be challenging, and I am sure there are many more lessons to come. We would love to hear from anyone interested in supporting any of the above and welcome any suggestions you might have. You can also sign up to our Newsletter to stay up to date with our journey via our website www.tumanakowellness.com.

Thanks again for everything, it is truly humbling to feel your support both professionally and on a personal level. We’ll keep you posted on our progress. And please know that you make our world brighter!

With continued determination to create a positive change,

The T-team

    What is next for Tūmanako

    15/08/2018 at 11:21 AM

    Monday 13 August, 2018

    Dear Tūmanako supporters

We wanted to write to you firstly to thank you all for your continued support of this important project.

We’d now like to share with you our next steps following the end of our PledgeMe campaign, as well as some lessons we’ve learned along the way.

It’s been a huge year for the Tūmanako Wellness Centre project. We’ve added so many people, skills and knowledge to our ever-growing team and we’ve come a long way from where we started.
