About

Hannah Howes And Ben Lemi Recording 2013

Project 2012-10-16 00:27:07 +1300

I am recording an album with Ben Lemi in March 2013, engineered by Lee Prebble. It will be created by a small group of musicians on a tight budget. It will be co-produced by Ben Lemi and myself. We have been working on new tracks in London and Berlin this autumn and will be touring NZ to get them nice and shiny for the recording studio. Lee is an incredible engineer and we are lucky to have the chance to work with him again in his new premises. We have 8 days in the studio and are looking to partially fund this aspect of the project.

This will be my first release in four years. I have self-funded three prior albums (with Creative NZ support for the production and promotion of my latest album Candy) and now I want to get in the studio and concrete something that is a signature piece for the collaboration of Ben Lemi Wood and myself, a working friendship that has spanned eight countries and five years. Ben has selflessly committed to music projects we love and know and if I don't deserve to be recognised on this album then he certainly does. The tracks are varied and not glued to one genre. Some are a little political. They do however promise to be listenable and moving and to demand repeated air play.

With your support we will put our hearts and souls into the project and deliver something you will cherish. I will be working on the design, promotion and marketing myself to reduce costs. I will not waste your money!

The total cost of eight days recording and mixing is around $4500 plus gst. Mastering will cost around $1000 and the manufacture of 1000 CDs is around $4500. So the total figure before promotion and marketing is around $10,000. However I have submitted what I believe to be a realistic figure to raise some of the recording costs and hope to generate the surplus required by touring. Failing that I will scale the project down to fit the budget available. The album will be released mid 2013. So you can expect to receive your rewards in NZ winter 2013. Back catalogue rewards can be posted sooner.

After 20 months away from New Zealand I saw some interesting, beautiful and sad things and people working selflessly in areas that are under-resourced and need our attention. I have decided that this project can function in two ways. As an expression of our creativity and as an expression of gratitude that we are fortunate enough to be able to give to those in greater need. I have chosen two charities that I visited on my travels and that I believe need my support- and yours.

If you choose to make your PledgeMe contribution to one of these charities I will use the money to make the recording, then the very first CDs sold after the release of the album, equal to the value of your donation, will go to the charity selected. (Failing CD sales reaching the designated amounts within 3 months of release, I will personally repay the amounts gifted to the charities.) I will ensure you receive confirmation of this donation.

We will be touring New Zealand this summer, in January and February 2013 without a new album but with a request that fans support us in making one! You will be rewarded with a 'gift' and the knowledge you have contributed directly to making this little time capsule come to fruition. You can do this one of the following ways:

  • make a 'delayed' donation to The Ponheary Ly Foundation supporting the education of children in Cambodia - http://theplf.org
  • make a 'delayed' donation to UXO Lao - an organisation that amongst other things fund and train workers to safely detonate the unexploded mines dropped on Laos (a country with the unwanted distinction of being per capita the most heavily bombed nation in the world) in order to reduce the number of civilian deaths and casualties by UXO and increase livelihood opportunities- www.uxolao.org
  • pre-purchase digital albums
  • pre-purchase physical CDs
  • buy a limited edition back-catalogue of Hannah Howes albums
  • book a private concert

I'm hoping for a miracle to see a new album come to fruition. Thank-you for looking and for your continued support.

Touring in this beautiful land

13/01/2013 at 8:15 PM

So far I've taken one bus on the Beautiful Land by Bus tour and about to take another- this small population only sustains a limited public transport network... In Nelson area it was travel by band wagon- and what an amazing time. The five shows with Dayna Sanerivi and Ben Wood have been incredible.... the smiles, compliments and focused attention from audiences at all performances have not gone unnoticed. Its great to be back travelling between majestic mountains, ancient forest, flowering manuka and kanuka and lush warm beaches empty of hoards and rubbish- clean peaceful New Zealand... home sweet home.
