The Elephant in the Room

For a new company trying to enter New Zealand market & compete the monopoly

What's so bad about monopoly

A successful industry is competitive, with a number of manufacturers or distributors of products and services (online and physical) all striving to attract customers. Vigorous competition requires businesses to strive to lower their prices and improve the quality of their products and services. Competition stimulates firms to lower their own costs and run their businesses as efficiently as possible. This brings in innovation and the most creative one wins. Competition also reduces the need for governmental interference through regulation of business.

Current Monopoly Service Fee

General Items (Success Fee)

7%-10%

Property (Listing Fee)

$300-$600

Cars

$100-$200

Are they justified in taking such huge fee?

Yes, and No

Yes : because, it's their platform and they can charge whatever they can pull off as long as people are buying and sales happen.

No : The situation is so bad that sellers are unable to make real profit. They are forced to increase price to compensate the high service fee of the platform.

“Either way customers are desperate for competition”

Why everthing is expensive in New Zealand

" Few years ago when I was in Auckland I bought a second hand sofa from an online trading website for $1000.

I was so happy because I was searching for a specific sofa design which is my favourite. Kids can sit on the deck. But unfortunately after couple of weeks I got a work assignment to move to Christchurch and decided to sell my sofa off in the same online auction site. I listed it for a 'buy now' price of $1080. You may think that I was expecting a $80 profit. Not really, I was happy to sell it for $1000 but I needed to make that $80 to pay success fee in the trading website.

One year has passed. I moved back to Auckland. I was looking in the same trading website for the same type sofa.. You won't believe it.. The same sofa is listed for ‘buy now’.It is listed for $1150. Whatever, I clicked on "Buy Now" button.. I am so happy I got my sofa back. When I went to pick up my sofa I realised that the seller (who originally bought the sofa from me a year ago) is going overseas. He recognised me and I casually asked him if he realize that he bought the sofa from me an year ago for $1080 and now he is selling it for $1150. He told me he is not taking any profit, he said he actually looses money as he needs to pay $85 to the trading website as success fee. "Oh, the poor guy"

This is what's happening here. I sold my sofa for $1080 which I originally bought for $1000 without taking any profit. I bought the same sofa for $1150 after two years and the seller also didn't take any profit. Where has all the money gone???

Do I dare to think the original price of the sofa before I ever purchased it from the site.

I am worried, will I have to sell the sofa for $1240 in the same online trading site again !

People say life in New Zealand is too expensive."

We kiwis DIY everything in a house but we don’t DIY when it comes to selling the house. We simply delegate it to real estate agents. Why ??

Why real estate agents sell more than 90% of houses in NZ even though we have all the systems in place to support private sale.

I had a house which I wanted to sell for 500k. I got a feel that it is not worth trying a private sale as it needs around $500 to post an ad in an online advertising website; what if I fail to sell privately and have to delegate it to a real estate agent at the end?? I will simply lose my $500.

I too approached a realestate agent which is a normal tradition in NZ. She said she can advertise the house for 550k which will include her commission and all listing fees and related expenses and a great deal for me. I agreed as it looked promising. At the end house got sold for 505k. After taking all the agent fees and other expenses I got 475k. Now I regret for not trying a private sale. I wish if there was a popular online advertising website/classifieds in NZ which is free or affordable for ordinary people.

Existing online advertising websites are charging around $500 from an ordinary person to list his house but the same website is charging only around $150 from a real estate agent to list the same house. This explains why private sales are not common here in NZ.

Bad traditions need a change here.

How is BigMarket different ?

$0 SUCCESS FEE & $0 LISTING FEE

Bigmarket has no success fee and no listing fee. Yes, it is free.

ARCHITECTURALLY STRONG

Advantages of an Architecturally Strong Platform are numerous and helps in reducing ‘man hours’ needed to develop, maintain and grow the software product.

Example Situation

Take a feature like Google maps Street View currently available to all listing under category ‘Property’. This can be made available to a different category like say, ’Flatmate Wanted’ by simply updating the configuration of  the category ’Flatmate Wanted’ with absolutely no change to the program. It can be done by a person who doesn’t know computer programming.

All of a sudden all listings under the category ‘Flatmate Wanted’ will show a Street View of its address. The amount of work required by us to make such a change is not comparable to that required by any typical old fashioned website.

Street view shown at the bottom of a property listing

WELL STRUCTURED CATEGORIES

Bigmarket has a very well structured list of categories which can be changed or new categories can be added easily. The platform is easily extendable meaning adding a new category like ‘garage sale’ is very easy.

HYBRID APPS

Cloud based, Highly scalable (Amazon Web Services, MongoDB, Node.js server) Restful APIs, oAuth, Angular 5. Single source code for Android, iOS and Web. BigMarket is built on Hybrid App and our mobile applications are Single Page Application(SPA) running on Angular 5. All we need is an update in our codebase(one and only) which is a single person job which will reflect on all the platforms.
