Spring Pest Purge:

Spring trapping season is starting in September and we wish to expand our efforts and need to prepare by purchasing more efficient and modern equipment so that we may continue our role as guardians of this important ecosystem.

While the Waipoua forest is home to our beloved Kauri giants, kiwi and other endangered native species it also houses rats, stoats, possums, weasels and weeds which pose a massive threat to the forest’s very survival.

If we neglect to act now we can write-off a future for Kauri.  Kauri have faced massive deforestation and now face a slow decline into extinction unless we can preserve and protect them and the ecosystems they form such a huge part of.

If we are successful in our aim of reaching our funding goal the money you provide will enable us to expand our operations and purchase necessary equipment.  We need more traps to develop more extensive trap lines and the necessary finances to enable our conservationists to maintain the lines and manage invasive and noxious weeds. Your support allows us to continue doing this important work to ensure that future generations will get to enjoy Waipoua as it once was.

Over 95% of all Kauri forests have been lost to logging and with them have gone the native species that depend on them. We want to reverse this trend and plant forests that future generations will get to enjoy, but in order to do this we must ensure that invasive pests and weeds are kept in check. Our volunteers are a massive part of this but they need more tools to do this important task as the forest develops and grows.

Our Team:

The Waipoua Forest Trust is a leader in Kauri Forest restoration and established the Millennium Forest as a way of reversing the decline in Kauri Forest habitat.  The Millennium Forest was created with the goal of establishing a mature kauri forest that in a thousand years will resemble Aotearoa and Te Tai Tokerau the way it was. We rely on the hard work of volunteers to do this important work as well as our two permanent staff and local communities but we continue this mahi with the hope that others will join us in this vital conservation effort.
