Boomerang Bags Launch

Project 2017-05-23 13:07:15 +1200

Boomerang Bags is a community iniatiave focusing on the elimination of single use plastic bags.

Passionate volunteers divert textiles and fabric from landfill to make reuseable ‘Boomerang Bags’ available as a free alternative solution to plastic bags.

Through Boomerang Bags we recreate communities, share skills, divert fabrics from landfill and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use.

In June this year Boomerang Bags Wellington will celebrate our launch, kick off plastic-free July, and realease over 1500 re-usable bags into our communities. These will be offered free as an alternative to plastic bags in all sorts of retail spaces from Farmers markets, to supermarkets and clothing stores.

Boomerang Bags Wellington will work over the next 3 years to extend this project NZ wide and create a national hub of like minded communities all working together to create a plastic free future.

By 2020 we hope to see New Zealand have a nationwide shift in society to be a plastic bag free country.

Who are we?

We call ourselves "The Crazy Bag Ladies", but we are really just everyday people that are deelpy concerned about the fact that the world is drowning in plastic. We come from all walks of life and from all over Wellington. We are, Students, Mums, Teachers, Community Workers, all with one thing in common, our desire to elimate single use plastic bags in New Zealand.

Join us on our crusade!

Almost there!

24/06/2017 at 10:15 PM

We're so close to meeting our goal! Now we're looking ahead to set new goals!

A number of you have asked "what will we do with the extra when we exceed the taeget"? Great question!

Given we are all volunteers, we are currently running the Boomerang Bags operations out of homes, garages, sheds, nooks and crannys of out kind hearted communities. What we really need is a hub space to be more accessible to our exiciting Boomerang groups, and have a space for the new communities to come and get some ideas for their set up.

Any funds exceeding our target will be put towards leasing a space - initially for storage, but ultimately for a permanent hub to host bees, meet communites, and have the Boomerang Bags Plastic Pollution Solution HQ in Wellington.

Thank you all for supporting us so far, you are amazing people, and we know we can make an impact, and so can you! We'll be getting all these bags and treats ready to post out so you can join the crusade and show off your swanky bags.

Please remember to pledge, like, share and spread the word!

xoxo

Introducing the rest of the crew...

20/06/2017 at 9:32 PM

Meet the delightful Steph!

Steph is a Psychology and Sociology student at Victoria University and is our key contact for all things screenprinting (think ink, prints and process). Based with our Aro Valley Boomerang Bag Community, Steph is always the calm at the centre of the storm and loves assisting new Boomerang Bags communites set up their screen printing processes.

Steph loves the sense of creativity and community in Wellington and is passionate about creating social and environmental change.

"I love meeting lots of like-minded people, and being part of something that is making tangible change"

Meet Emma our super sewer!

Emma is an amazing Mum of 2, a passionate teacher and a feisty environmentalist (in a good way!). Emma is our Karori Lead Co-ordinator, runs our Karori Facebook page and somehow manages to know the name of every volunteer that pops through the door.

She is by the far the best sewer on the team and has spent many a night driving her lovely husband bonkers with the constant whir of her trusty machine. Emma truly believes that change starts at home and with our children. She is often heard encouraging young-uns to nag their parents into not using plastic bags.

'I hate plastic and I am rethinking and slowly attempting to change habits in my own home where ever I can, but it is a gradual process. I really hope our enthusiasm will inspire others to make small changes to the way they live, one person really CAN make a difference!'

And finally meet me... Ali! (the big one in the background)

I am a proud Mama of 2 who spends a lot of time flabbergasted at how in the short space of under 100 years the human race has managed to drown itself in plastic. It concerns me that convenience has become more important than common sense and the human race swans about on their only planet assuming that someone else will take care of their waste.

Boomerang Bags has been an incredible and eye opening journey for me so far, where I am have met amazing passionate people who are making positive change in their families and communities.

Come and join us on this Boomerang Bag adventure and help us keep the momentum of this project moving all the way to a Plastic Bag Free New Zealand.

We have 5 days left to fund our project and we are almost there, so please PLEDGE and SHARE and let's make the world a better place.

6 Days to go... time to meet the team

19/06/2017 at 4:05 PM

6 DAYS TO GO...

Time to meet some of the amazing team behind Wellington Boomerang Bags.

Introducing the lovely Sarah!

Sarah is our Aussie import and has moved from Melbourne to get involved in community and environmental projects. With a background in developement and environmental education, she has spent many hours ranting about waste. In order to avoid becoming bitter and twisted about it, she has found a group of people that are passionate about making changes and embracing alternatives to "convenient" plastics.

“Boomerang Bags has been such a great way to meet people and is a simple way to get people thinking and talking about waste. I have met so many generous and friendly people who care just as much as I do about raising awareness and embracing behaviour change to tackle waste issues locally and globally. It has seemed to snowball and I am positive we will be part of a Plastic Bag Free New Zealand.”

Meet the amazing Jemma!

Jemma is our social media guru and runs our storage unit (aka her spare bedroom). With a background in project management, she keeps us organised and communicating, and draws loads of mind maps. Jemma is also our screen printing expert and can smash out 200 pockets over a glass of whisky and a few episodes of "Game of Thrones".

"I love being part of the Boomerang Bag community. I have connected with an awesome and passionate group of people who all agree that plastic bags are an unnecessary aspect in our lives."

Meet the wonderful Pip!

Pip is our waste diversion master and is super passionate about finding ways to divert usable waste from landfill.  Currently finishing her GradDip in Chemistry at Victoria University, Pip is an advisor at the Ministry for Primary Industries and is our go to person for all things fabric. Pip strongly believes that everything can be given a second life and wants to ensure that all of the fabric we divert is used in the most productive way possible.

Pip has also been to Scott Base which makes her the coolest of all of us.

With only 6 days to go, we need one final push to fund our campaign... so please SHARE to all of your friends, families and networks, so we can all enjoy a plastic bag free New Zealand.
