One In A Million - A Year Long ‘ArtVenture’ In Mental Health

Project 2016-11-11 09:00:21 +1300

Meet Francis

Francis is a painter, turned mental health nurse, turned painter.  He has been working in acute Mental Health for the past 8 years. He is taking a leave of absence - “a mental health year” - to undertake this massively ambitious ‘artventure’.

The One in a Million Project
In 2017 Francis will make 1,000,000 artworks which he will sell for $1 each. In the process, he is going to set a world record, and generate unique works of art that anyone could set their sights on owning. To do this, he will have to make an artwork roughly every 8 seconds.

A Million Artworks? That’s Mental.

Before you say "that's totally insane!" you might want to know that Francis will give a quarter of the proceeds to a myth-busting mental health project. All going well, that's $250,000 for mental health awareness storytelling.

The whole project plays with our commonly held notions of insanity and mental illness. At the heart of this epic undertaking is the belief that mental health is a spectrum and we are all on it. No-one is immune to the effects of stress and trauma. And for some people it is profoundly debilitating.

In our lifetime it’s quite likely that you or someone you know will have a mental health struggle. One in six adults in NZ will be diagnosed with a common mental health disorder at some point in their lives. It’s not something that happens to 'other people'. It's just not very visible to us, and Francis would like to change that. By funding mental health storytelling, Francis will enable the stories of those who have lived with mental illness and have managed to find a new equilibrium to be told. These are the stories that will help demystify mental illness.

So, this project is part art, part therapy, part social entrepreneurship, part peer lending, part local employment scheme, part ‘make a buck or two for his family’ scheme.

Francis' "medieval pop-art" project is intended to resonate with lots of different communities and people - from mental health workers and patients to art appreciators and collectors and fans of the project. Parents will be able to help their children buy their first work of art and support mental health. People on the lowest of incomes can own a handmade work of art. People who have experienced mental health issues can own an artwork that touches on their experience.

How's He Gonna Do It?

Francis will spend 2017 creating a work of art roughly every 8 seconds, 480 per hour, 8 hours a day (3,850), 5 days a week (19,230) for a year (*1,000,000). Plus lunch-breaks.

He's gonna need some help to pull it off. He will need to employ someone in the studio to support him, and a social media maven to ensure that this project gets the attention it needs so that it succeeds.

So we want to pre-sell some works to raise the money to keep the project going over the early stages where there are material and personnel costs and not a lot of money coming in.

Yes, we know it's bonkers. And it's going to take more than just one man in his studio to pull it off. But we reckon it is just so wickedly ambitious that it might inspire people to get involved: to buy the work, to support and share the project and raise some money to bust myths about mental health at the same time.

Are you in? We need your help to share this on your networks and talk about it over the water cooler. This is a crazy time of year to be doing this, just as people are scattering for the holidays. Please buy a reward, brag about it and generally give this project your love. We thank you. Your support means a huge deal!

The works will be dispatched shortly after the project concludes on December 31 2017*.

(*We may have the opportunity to distribute a couple of batches of art during the year, but at this stage, plan to get a late chrissy pressie!)

Were very well received - and are now tantalisingly close to our target.

The campaign wraps up at 5pm tomorrow - so we need to get it over the line so that you can get all your pledges met!

How about a special kid in your life? Buy them their first Artwork! Or maybe a last minute Chrissy present for someone?

So much love and gratitude for all your encouragement - especially at this time of the year. It makes us feel even more supported.

Ten for ten and some new rewards added

19/12/2016 at 10:55 PM

Dear Nailbiters!

We've just added a couple of excellent rewards. You can get an artwork for yourself and 20 works of art will be given to a Kindy or School of your choice (you can tell us which school, or we will give them to our local school).

You can pick a special number - each of our artworks are stamped 1-1,000,000 so you can choose a special number - your kid's birthday, your wedding anniversary (... or divorce...). What ever numbers feel special to you.

Or you can come for a studio visit and choose your own artwork selection. And we would shout you a coffee too. Or maybe this is the special Christmas gift for someone special...

So jump back on and get a very cool reward for yourself or someone else!

THanks for your support!

Lots of love, The Saloles of Paekakariki
