Four New Vegan Cheeses!

Project 2016-09-26 13:44:18 +1300

When Angel Food got started 10 years ago, ‘vegan’ was a bit of a dirty word in New Zealand.

But times have changed.

And with our dairy-free cheese alternatives now available at hundreds of stores around NZ, and in numerous eateries (including all 69 Hell pizza stores!), we reckon we’ve played a part in raising the profile of a vegan diet as a viable option that doesn’t mean forsaking old favourites like pizza and lasagne.

But there’s no time for resting on our cheesey laurels!

What we really need to do ASAP is consolidate that success by launching more cheesey goodness.

Feta to go on your salad would be nice, right? And cheddar for sandwiches and on crackers? Maybe even some cream cheese and cheddar spread to go on bagels and crusty baguettes?

These things are entirely possible! In fact, we’re pretty far along the development process already… and with the help of our crowd, we will be able to launch these four products by May 2017 at the latest.

Each new product requires investment that is pretty significant for a pretty small business:

  • Research and development $2000
  • Ingredients and packaging $5000
  • Manufacturing $2000
  • Marketing $3000

Because of the work we've already got under our belts, and because there will be shared resources between some of the products, we can launch four products for the price of three.

Please note that the four products will not be ready at exactly the same time – which is why we don’t have an option to have them all them in a single reward. We’ll ship the products as they become available.

We are very confident that we can fulfil this promise. But if we hit an unforseen hurdle and can't launch the product you have pledged on, we will contact you to figure out which product you'd enjoy instead. This scenario is very unlikely to happen!

Each reward includes courier delivery – but if you’d like to pick up from our central Auckland office, and save us the cost of the courier, we’ll add in an extra Angel Food product to your reward.

ABOUT TEAM ANGEL FOOD

Truth is, we're a small team. Small, hardworking, creative and determined!

Alice Shopland is our founder and CEO.

Colin Woods is our director of quality and systems.

Immi Paterson-Harkness is our office manager.

We work with an amazing team of contractors (our food technolgist, our designer, and our manufacturers) and part-timers (who help out at events like the Auckland Food Show and Vegan Vibes).

All of these people get what we're about. They understand the imperative to deliver more and more delicious dairy-free and vegan options, to be part of the mainstreaming of plant-based foods in lil ol' meat- and dairy-centric New Zealand.

Our current products:

  • Dairy-free mozzarella alternative
  • Dairy-free sour cream
  • Dairy-free cheesey sauce mix (mild and tasty variants)
  • Dairy-free parmesan alternative (original and smoky variants)
  • Dairy-free cheesey sauce (chilled)

This is our third PledgeMe adventure! Way back in 2013 we raised $2500 to help launch our egg-free meringues... which were pretty ground-breaking at the time but have since been superseded by aquafaba. And in June last year we used the PledgeMe equity platform to sell shares in the company. Thanks for being there, PledgeMe!

Thanks for your support

27/10/2016 at 5:47 PM

Well, our PledgeMe campaign has ended and we got nowhere near our target! But we'd still like to thank everybody who got behind us, whether through pledging money or sharing our posts. Your support means A LOT to us, even if we didn't get our hands on your money :-) We're about to activate plan B, because we're stubborn and because New Zealand really does need more dairy-free cheese! Watch this space.

2 new rewards, and a cheddar update

21/10/2016 at 9:11 AM

Alice visited our food technologist yesterday to check out the latest bench trial of our upcoming cheddar... and it's great! Perfect texture to enjoy in sandwiches and on crackers. The flavour is a mouthwatering combination of salty and tangy and downright cheddary. So excited about getting this long-awaited deliciousness out of the test kitchen and into the next stage! The next stage is another 50kg trial production run at our manufacturers. Over the last few months we've done several of these 50kg batches of cheddar, each one revealing a new manufacturing challenge. Product development is very satisfying, but it can be very slow going at times.

New reward available - vegan salami!

17/10/2016 at 5:08 PM

Just added a delicious new reward.... it's not vegan cheese, but it will go great with vegan cheese! Our new meat-free salami, based on gluten flour and kumara flour, very tasty and just a little bit spicy. Big 400g pack will make a lot of sandwiches and pizzas and general snacking.
