Save ONEONESIX - Whāngārei’s Community Space

Project 2016-08-16 19:54:21 +1200

A year ago Company of Giants took over the lease of the old church at 116 Bank Street for a trial period of one year. We wanted to create a vibrant community arts and performance centre with and for the people of Whāngārei. We had no money and heaps to do. Now, one year on, ONEONESIX is a thriving hub of activity.

Just this year we’ve had over 5,000 people through the space. It's filled with all sorts of awesome things:  community choir, movement therapy for kids, Skateschool, community radio, theatre making, touring theatre shows, Mau Rakau, coffee making, art galleries, performance evenings, circus and so much more! We’ve had massive interest from people wanting to be a part of ONEONESIX and we’ve got big plans for what happens next.

We’ve tried to say Yes! to everyone who needed a space and we asked that people contribute what they could in return. Any money made from renting the space has gone towards fixing it up and making it more usable and accessible as a quality venue. We’ve painted, fixed up the kitchen, replaced broken windows, bought tap fittings, put up theatre curtains, planted fruit trees and done a bunch of other things needed to run a community centre. The project has been run entirely by volunteers - thanks Whāngārei!

It’s been an amazing year and now, at the end of that year, we have a rates and utilities bill of $5,990.97 to pat. So we’re asking for your help. If everyone who’s visited the space this year donated just $1.00 for every visit we would get there!

If you’ve been to the space and enjoyed something there you’ll know what an amazing and important place ONEONESIX is. To help keep it going we’re asking you to please dig behind the couch, empty your pockets of change, ask your neighbour, tell your friends and help us reach our pledge so we can keep the ONEONESIX doors open, forever!

Thank you Whāngārei,

Company of Giants
