A Quest To Reduce Ocean Plastic

Project 2016-08-10 17:28:24 +1200

Description

From September until December of this year I plan to cycle 2000km along the Philippines' coastline to raise awareness of the issue of plastic pollution. Given the large population living close to the coast, the Philippines is the third biggest contributor to ocean plastic. I have a lot of experience working and volunteering in the country, I love the people and the place. In 2013-2014 I sailed from New Zealand to the Philippines and the more I learn about ocean plastic the more I want to do something about this issue. By 2050 scientists predict there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. That's terrible, and not something we want our kids/grandkids to have to deal with.

I plan to deliver the message by organising beach clean ups every afternoon in the areas I am staying, as well as visiting schools and universities twice a week.

Beach Clean

The money will go towards organising and rallying people for the beach clean ups (approx $600), buying supplies and organising the school visits (approx $400) as well as printing marketing materials to explain the issues of plastic pollution (approx $500). If enough people get on board and I manage to go above my target then excess funds will be diverted to the cause of reducing plastic in the Philippines, the best way I see fit at the end of the three months.

I really need people to get behind this, not just financially but to support the cause by jumping on facebook and liking my page www.facebook.com/plasticfreephili. Every person who supports me provides incentive to keep pedaling, to keep beach cleaning, and to keep advocating these issues. I really appreciate you getting behind this cause!

Thanks so much guys!
